Discrimination should be based on academic achievement, not race.

If someone with a great academic record is not accepted at a university because of their race, that is just wrong.

The racial makeup of the student body does not prove racial discrimination. Some freaks jump to that conclusion.

Some races just may not be attracted to your university or they may be mostly underachievers.

I had a couple black friends in high school. they were 2 out of about 5 of the entire black population. 1 of them was one smart mofo. 1500 SAT, 4.0+ gpa, etc. He applied to engineering to UCLA, UCB, USC, and some other private schools. He chose USC because they offered him full scholarship + $500 a month stipend.

The other guy was not as bright, but not an idiot. 1100 SAT, 3.0 gpa. He got accepted to UCLA, UCB. He also chose to go to a private school - he got a full ride to Emory.
Here is another personal anecdote.

When I was in college, the average for the school for accepted medical school applicants (seniors who had applied and gotten into a med school) was a 3.7 GPA and a 90th %ile MCAT score. The average for blacks was 3.1 GPA and 50%ile MCAT score (100% of applicants were accepted into medical school)

Do what you want with that information.

Damn, I can possibly see the case for undergrads, but when you're going to med school to become a doctor and people's lives will be in your hands, it should be nothing less than pure credentials that gets you in..

lol a bit too idealistic

notice how they used the term "underrepresented minority"? why not just minorities right? minorities is what matters, but they know very well they have to completely pretend asians do not exist so they can continue their little crusade. we are an inconvenient truth.

Because when you make up 40% of your school's population you're no longer a minority.

qft

bullsh*t. we are what? 1% of the us population? we are about as "minority" as it gets. asians work damn hard to get into those schools, they don't get in because of some kind of tradition or old time racism type bullsh*t. but its hidden away, why? because its an inconvenient truth that a minority CAN succeed. and that goes against all the whining the other groups do about the system keeping them down.

1. while only (iirc) 4% of the us population, i would hazard a guess that asians make up a much larger percentage on many college campuses. i could be wrong, as i haven't seen nationwide statistics, but that's what i've seen in my personal experience.
2. i don't think it's hidden away. i think the difference is that (in a broad, over-generalization) asians and whites in america are actually more privelaged than the other under-represented minorities. that is, asians and whites have access to better schools, tutors, more money, etc. as i said, this is a generalization, but on average is probably true.
3. despite all that, i actually agree with you (if you read my other posts): race has no place in admissions. including it as part of the application is a way to treat the symptoms, rather than the cause, of the problem.

Again we see the real problem. Confusing race with economics.

how many % of asian will there be in any UC if race is not a factor? I would say it would be over 80%.

I have been asking myself this question for 10 years.

The whole term minority seems really dumb. When white guys are down to 15% of the US population, they will somehow still be the majority.

Why is it so hard to understand that race is not a factor in UC admissions?

How come Asian people don't get special treatment? Why do we have to have a higher test score and GPA? It's reverse racism!

Why isn't this stuff illegal? It's discrimination, that's all it is: the very thing they're trying to get rid of in this country. I still don't understand why we still fill out ethnicity on many tests. Someone who works harder than another deserves the position more, especially if it's a risky position like surgery where skill and aptitude is crucial.

It's pure BS. I don't care what your background is, if you don't have the qualifications to get accepted you shouldn't be. The last thing I want is to go to a doctor and later find out he/she was a D average student but got through med. school because he/she was a certain race/colour/background/ethnicity/whatever-the-fvck-you-want-to-call-it.

Like I said, do what you will with that information, but it is true. This is the very basis for the case against affirmative action - better white candidates losing out to minorities who aren't qualified. It's not the rule by any means, but it certainly is there.
