Just ran into a guy who was a music major and music buff, but did not have a clue who Ravi Shankar was.
He also loves the Beatles!

from a quick google, looks like he helped teach george harrison sitar.

famous sitar player, still playing.

a sitar is a classical indian instrument that looks like a banjo, or guitar, or whater you want to compare it to.

So....why would this be common knowledge?

Did the OP mistake "Beatles fan" for "obsessed Beatles trivia nut"?

No you don't have to be an obsessed trive nut to know that the beatles reveared shankar, he was a spiritual mentor for them as well. One of the best sitar players in modern history, and yes he is the dad of norah jones. She didnt' realize this until she was an adult I'm told.

I am a Beatles fan and I never heard of him. George played the sitar for the Beatles. Now Billy Preston, if he didn't know who he is, he's a posuer ;)

I guess it makes a difference whether you like the Beatles as in you just like to listen to their music, or if you like the Beatles as in you like to listen to their music and find out more about them. I would find that situation a little surprising myself.
