sure,that doesn`t mean there is no overpopulation,but apocalyptic predictions are laughable at best.
the west actually needs more people,at least in Europe.

Hehe yeah it is interesting to see how these predictions ultimately pan out. Human behavior is nearly impossible to predict on this kind of scale.

Even a lot of the projections out there are far from apocalyptic. For example I think most projections suggest global population will peak at about 10 billion between 2050 and 2100. Sure, that's a lot of people, but I don't think it's unsustainable, especially considering scientific advancements will allow us to more efficiently utilize the resources on this planet (and eventually on other planets, I'm sure).

It's hard to predict much from this, to global warming, to the stock market, to whether it will rain or be sunny 10 days from now. It's cute that people still think they have great powers of prescience, though.

i think that we can sustain 10 billion right now comfortably, and furthermore based on current trends most predictions show growth rates slowing dramatically and population peaking in about 40-0 years in the 9 billion range.

We're currently having a difficult time sustaining six billion people comfortably since the vast majority of people on this earth spend nearly their entire life in poverty.

Differrent cultural groups have different birth rates. People in the upper middle class and the filthy rich and often the more industrialized people often have lower birth rates. However, poorer people and imigrants often have higher birthrates. Then in some cultures they consider children more valuable than money. If you look at Mormons or in other times Catholics you may see higher birth rates. This may be important as we see larger number of immigrants moving in to the USA.

I think however, you are misguided. If you look at a country like China the largest problems they have come from pollution. Much of their land and water is so polluted that they can not grow any food on it. They continue to poison their own land.

Resources like water and land are precious. In the south western united states Water is scarce and the Colorado River supplies water to all the surrounding states. But the supply is still not infinite. Soon there will not be enough water to drink. That is what happens when you choose to live in the desert. Water could still be diverted from elsewhere. When the dams in the west were built it was like an impossible task. We built a dam in a place with no roads in the middle of the desert in 100+ degree weather. There is no challange we can not overcome. Do not underestimate the ingenuity of the people in the USA.
