How can 1-800-CALL-ATT Charge $7.09 for less than a minute on the phone?

A year ago, the wife was in the airport in Canada and used one of these stupid collect numbers and cost us about $24 in a few minutes. She recently used 1-800-CALL-ATT to make less than a one minute call from the US to Canada. Although it was, in retrospect, a bad idea to give the credit card number, the charge was $7.09. On their commericals, they're like $.10/minute or something. This stuff is a big f**king scam and I'd reco anybody to stay away with carot-top and whoever else the hell says you can get cheap long distance with these silly 1-800 numbers.

I think there's a minimum call time to get the 10 cents per minute rate?

Plus she did an international long distance call :/
$.10 / minute is for domestic calls.
But $7.09 is freaking insane still.

That is what happened to us. The complaint number on that link is on our CC statement. I think I will not bother calling it. I will call MBNA and dispute the charge. Is it safe to say a person can't bill a CC without the person knowing how much it's billed for? Obviously, nobody informed us it would be $7.09. I mean, they can't charge $10,000/second and expect us to pay it just for giving the number.

If you looks at the billing statement, you will see something like $5/mon (for some kind of service charge) + $0.39 for the call + taxes = $7.09

They charge us $6.xx something for not making any call. I cancel everything we had with them after we got that bill.
BTW, before, the plan was $0/mon if we don't make any long distance call. It seems they change the terms of the plan and start adding charge. :|

Yeah... the fact that your call was so short is why it seems outrageously expensive. Most of those 1-800 collect numbers charge a $3 - $6 per call service fee, on top of your per-minute rate. They charge you even more if you are calling from a pay phone (pay phone surcharge), airport (airport tax), or need operator assistance.

It is probably $0.10 a minute only after other "fees and charges."

Calling cards only charged 10 minutes to use a pay phone, now they charge like 60 minutes of call time just to use a pay phone.

How to make collect calls(commercial)
Operater: "State your name please"
Bob: "Bob Itsaboy"
Dad: "Hello"
Operater: "You have a collect call from 'Bob Itsaboy, do you accept charges"
Dad: "No" then hangs up
Mom: "Who was that?"
Dad: "That was Bob, they had a boy."

I used 1-800-CALL-ATT with a credit card a couple of years ago and had a similar charge of $13 for 2 calls of less than a minute (not international). But as I recall they told me what the charge would be before the call was connected.
