How big of an image quality diff between a 7900 and a x1950pro

It all depends on which nvidea card you're talking about... The x1950pro beats the 7900 GS everytime, and the GT most of the time, but the GTX will beat the x1950pro any day.

IMO, if you are already going to spend $200+ for the x1950pro, just spend a little more and get the 1950xt. It's 250 on newegg, and it blows all of those cards out of the water!

redid the topic for clarity. I want to know about image quality.. I read people saying they take back the 7xxx series cards because the image quality is so much worse than atis.

I have a 7900GT and my buddy has an x1950. The image quality is exaclty the same. I saw no difference either did he. After my fiasco with NWN and trying to run it on an ATI card, I gave up on ATI. nV all the way for me from now on.

actually theres no real difference.
Although i did hear that if optimizations aren't enabled in the forceware drivers, that there can be "texture crawling".

But otherwise the only thing goingfor ATI is the High Quality AF.That beats anythin Nvidia has to offer on the 7xxx series. And it is noticable in out door games.

That type of biased posts really doesn't help people. People needs to get their questions quickly answered, and any X1900 series provides higher AF quality than any 7X00 series, period. The Anti Aliasing is a differente story, in default multi sampling, both are pretty much the same, but once you use Super Sampling, the nVidia cards has the slight edge. But overall, the X19X0 series provides better image quality overall, albeit slighly, and increasing image quality using AF and Anti Aliasing with less performance hit just underscores ATi in this discipline.

are we talking a huge IQ difference between the x1900 series and the 7xxx series or are we talking minor differences here? When I read people sending back a 7950gt because the image quality is so poor I really have to wonder.

minor differences. nvidia cards shimmer a bit when you turn AF on and also have optimizations on, but they also have supersampled AA modes which are better than any AA modes ATI cards have. ATI cards have angle independent HQAF, but that also causes shimmering to occur (Text, "There isn't really a way to "fix" ATI's 16x high quality AF issue.") ATI x1xxx cards also have HDR + AA capabilities in games like Oblivion, Far cry, etc, games in which you cant use both HDR and AA on nVidia cards.

I don't really see the differences in texture filtering at high-quality levels on my 7950GT... the X19X0 series look pretty much the same. My friend got an X1950XTX for Christmas, and I can't tell the differences (all optimizations on mine turned OFF, for reference). The antialiasing is pretty much the same, until you get down to transparency/adaptive AA. That is where my card really shines.

Yeah I read that if you turn the optimizations off they look similar though atis looks slightly better. But you lose performance on the 7900s thus giving ati the edge.

i just grabbed a HIS X1950pro 256MB.... was tempted by the XT, but the lack of internal Crossfire was a turn off..... i want to be able to run 1+1 and then 2+1 when i grab me an R600!

Should be a nice boost over my current X800XT PE though!
