Much to my surprise, the printer directory in Leopard (for me at least) was 3.17gb in size. Seems a tad large, no?

Its located at; /Library/Printers/

Is everyone else's this large?

Yea.. it takes up a good chunk of the Leopard install. I usually deselect it at installation. Plus a good majority of the drivers that it contains I don't use.

I think i might just zip up the folders I don't need and throw them on my external.

Mine is 1.42 GB (2008 Mac Pro). But I did a fresh install when I originally got the machine and deselected most of the printer drivers.

150MB. I deselect the printer drivers when I install OS X, as well as the alternate languages.

Even though I need to print to several HP printers, if I install just the HP printers, it's still like 900MB. So I've just downloaded the drivers for the printers I need and just install them after a reformat.

Mine is a whopping 0KB. I never use my Macbook to print so I removed all of them during the install. Hah.

Can the directory just be backed up to an external and deleted safely? Are PDF printing options stored here?

1.3MB, the only printer I directly print to is a Brother that the computer automatically downloaded the driver for, and I just use Generic PostScript for everything else.

You can print to PDF without installing the printer drivers. I know this for a fact.

Just got home and checked... there is an Adobe driver in there for me.

Under PPD Plugins

Might be directly related to have Creative Suite/Distiller installed. Will report back if there are problems, but that file is the only one I'm going to keep.

OS X does not use Adobe to handle PDFs at all, so it must be from Adobe software you have installed.
