i have about 2800+ MP3s. most of them are from ripping my own cds just coz i dont like changing cds when i could just double click a song and i hate downloading coz of inconsistency with naming, bitrate, quality, etc etc. i rip my cds at no less than 256bitrate.

like 96% is legal, the rest are impossible to find on cd or just not worth the album.

not very legal, but it's not my fault

mostly livesets and other rare stuff that will never make it's way to cd's

I currently have ~6000. About half I have ripped from my CDs the other half I have downloaded but since I own those albums on vinyl I consider my collection mostly legal.

What are you qualifying as Legal/not legal? And what source are those of you who have hundreds of MP3's using to check each of your songs?

Are you considering MP3's from music you've bought as being legal? And downloaded as not legal?

Separated-150,000 Albums-average 15 songs on a cd
Just Mp3's-100,000 +
I think 2 or 3 cds out of the 150,000 are legal. When i bought them i ripped them and then they are in storage now.
AND no these are not all on my hard drive. All my mp3's are but only 250 albums are on my hard drive

legal - either you own the cd or cassestte or vinyl or 8track, etc etc OR you downloaded from a legal mp3 website like mp3.com. there are some other legal ways to obtain mp3s but basically its not through file sharing programs.

illegal - songs you can buy on cd or somewhere but have chosen to download someone else's rip of the song. there are other illegal ways too but im too lazy to list them all.

to check the number of mp3s u have, u can just drag your mp3 folder into winamp and it will tell u how many songs u have. you may need to generate an html playlist.

LOL :D

Asking "to what extent" an MP3 collection is "legal" is akin to asking "to what extent" an ISO FTP is "legal". :)

about 95% are legal. Most are ripped CD's. The ones that arent ripped either I have the tapes or I dont have it. The ones that arent on cd's or tapes are singles or rare stuff. I have about 2000+ tracks.

26 gig - My complete CD collection ripped and encoded
36 gig - What some would call my "without any morals and illegal" mp3s

I have about 25GB worth of mp3s, many of which are ripped cds of mine or my g/f's, many are "legally" downloaded from mp3.com. A large number have also been downloaded over a period of time from Scour, Napster, and gnutella.

I don't think it's been legally established that a user downloading a file from someone via a p2p network is illegal. The RIAA would have you believe that it is, but I don't believe this has been established in court.

Another interesting question would be "How large is your pr0n collection?"

:)

I've got around 2400 songs. A lot are legal, either ripped from CDs I own or copies of vinyls that I have.
