I am curious why you are asking? Just for the heck of it? If you go to USC, why not just go there and look? And how would someone describe how large it is to you? Would you want a square footage?

I got a question that asked something like "what order of magnitude is the mass of the shrine auditorium" I uber suck at making estimations on how big/tall buildings are, so I'm asking on ATOT if anyone knows. I figure if I know a rough estimate on the volume, I can estimate the order of magnitude of the mass.

All I really know is that it seats about 6500 people. If each chair was ~5kg, the shrine is at least 10^4 kg

would 400' x 400' x 200' be a good guess?

A building weighs alot more than jsut the seats. I mean you have all the wood, framing, carpets, etc don't you?

yeah, i'm just giving a minimum to the mass.

since 5 * 6500 gives 32,500 kg, the carpet, toilets, etc...everything inside adds up to ~100,000kg.

then i'd just use the density of some wood, assume a 5' or so thickness to the building and compute from there...

How close can you get? You can be +/- what percentage? I think this is almost impossible to figure out. There are probably a million variables you haven't though of. I hope this is not a big assignment.

"The Shrine was built in 1925 by the Al Malikah Temple, in a Spanish Colonial style of architecture with a Moorish flair. Its staggering dimensions of 13,400 square feet, and 186 foot wide and 72 foot deep stage make it the largest in Los Angeles. There are 6,489 seats, three levels of foyers, and one of the world's largest theater pipe organs. Despite its cavernous appearance it is known for its remarkably sensitive acoustics. The 56,000 square foot Exposition Hall serves trade shows, conventions, banquets and concerts."

Look Here

That should get you closer to your guess.
