how big is a 2x4?

i know wood doesn't use inches, or uses some bastardized inch so that a 2x4 isn't 2"x4"

1.5"x3.5" exactly.

The house I'm in now has 1.625"x3.625" studs. The century home I lived in during my teens had true 2"x4" rough sawn studs.

IIRC usually dimensional lumber is 1/2" smaller then the stated size, ie the 2x4. The exception is 1X lumber. The 1" dimension is really 3/4".

It is 2" x 4" rough, but not after it leaves the mill.

Having built quite a few things, including aquarium stands, let me make a suggestion:

Be ready to build it at least twice if you've never built anything before!

good thing lumber and beer are cheap!

probably a queen size. king is too big, and would dominate the apartment. i'm thinking two halves, so it is easy to move.
