How bad would this affect my credit?

Lifer
so I moved out of an apt complex a couple of months ago. I had a deposit of 200 bucks, and on the itemized list that they sent me they had the nerve to actually CHARGE me close to 300 in cleaning and painting fees, so I OWE close to $100 to them.

I think this is bullsh!t and I dont want to pay the extra bill, however I am afraid that this can affect my credit. However I have pretty good credit (>760). How bad can this issue affect my credit?

Take it up with the management...do you feel you left the apartment in pretty much the same condition as you moved in? Ask to see ALL the receipts for the supposed cleaning and painting, threaten to contact the BBB, and so on.

Unfortunately, when it comes right down to it, there's not much you can do if they keep the deposit. Unless you got pics when you moved in, and took more when you moved out. I got screwed out of my cleaning deposit once...even though the apartment was cleaner when I moved out than when I moved in.

There's really only two ways this would affect your credit report: either they refer your bill to a collections agency, or they file a suit against in you in small-claims court.

I doubt they would do either over a $100 bill... but you never know.

The bad news is that derogatory public information (like getting sued), and collection activity reflects VERY badly on your credit score-- no matter the dollar amount involved.

I pretty much kissed my deposit good bye, but they actually wanted MORE money out of me.. and I dont want to pay that extra 100 bucks.

on the bill they sent me they have this wording:
please contact our office to make payment arrangements within 30 days to avoid having your account sent to a collections agency. and the amount is less than 95 bucks. Would they REALLY send this to a collections agency??

Some people would. I've seen collection notices on some people's credit reports for less than $20.

I would call the management office and ask for proof of the damages they claim. They probably won't provide picture proof, but at the least they should be able to provide the receipts for the repainting and cleaning, like jagec said.

It sounds as though they are playing a game of poker with you. Do you call their bluff, or do you fold?

if the landlord's a dck he can fvck you and you may have trouble renting from future landlords who look at the report and see you "stiffed" the landlord

My refused to pay Ameritech about 7 years ago over an installation they never done and it was $49, they still sold it to the collection agency.

I actually have their so called "bill" and it is all from one company (one company does painting and cleaning). and the bill is very simple.

btw this was an apt complex, so it was run by a management company.

how did this affect ur credit? did u pay up?

You can ask for a copy of their receipts to confirm the cost, which doesn't sound unreasonable if it was a lot of cleaning (ie: steamcleaning carpets, new paint, etc).
