I just ordered one of these. $40 AR for a 700W with four 6+2 PCI-E power connectors.

I needed the four PCI-E more than the 700W.

I was kind of on the fence, seeing some of the DOA reviews, but it has a 5-year warranty, so that pushed me over the edge. I figured, at worst, I might have to RMA it.

Usage is for a quad-GPU crunching rig, currently with four 9600GSO cards. (Ok, the rig is old, but still semi-useful.)

That rig can draw 400W+ at the wall.

If all the rig will draw is 400w,that PSU will be fine.
However,I seriously doubt it will draw only 400w.

That particular unit is probably OK... manufactured by CWT, +12V rated for 52A @50C, but these are just official specs. http://www.realhardtechx.com/index_archivos/Page680.htm
Too bad its efficiency is utterly shit.

I'm wondering though why you're holding on to such old cards. A new card with similar perfomance would consume several times less power. The 9600 GSO is roughly the speed of a 3850 which performs about one third as well as a 7750 but consumes more power.

That's not the same unit though. That's the FSP built version with 80+ Bronze efficiency. The OP bought the CWT built one with no efficiency rating.

TT PSUs are garbage. Period.

I have the 600W TR2... It's only 80+ certified... Mine doesn't even have a single 8 pin PCI-e connector. Both are 6 pin. I can't immagine that the 700W TR2 would actually be able to safely provide power on all four 8 pin PCI-e connectors.

It seemed like a great deal, I think I got mine for $30-35 after MIR (which I have not received yet and it has been 3 months............)... But then I had to pay $20 for RMA shipping :\ So I actually ended up spending about $70 for a garbage PSU that is likely to crap out again.

I ran this PSU in my mining rig for about a month before it crapped out. It was only running a 7850 and a 5870 and an OCed 2500k (stock voltage 4GHz).

I had a 600W TR2..luckily I forgot to send in the rebate.. I returned that sucker. It ran hot and noisy as hell. I picked up an Antec 80 Plus Gold.. and it pulls way less power, runs cooler, and the fan doesn't run as hard.

moral of the story.. I am not a fan of the Thermatake TR2 line.

All that review is of a company that gets units for free, then gives um a stamp on the virtual ass and approves them. Of course its a good unit, we got it for free.........

Should I return it then? I haven't even opened the UPS package. Could I bring it back to the UPS store and try to refuse delivery and get them to take back the package, so I don't get hit by restocking fees?

You won't get hit by restocking fees as long as it is unopened. However, if you have to pay for shipping, you might as well keep it.
