hey all...lately ive been trying to get into 3d modeling and am a little concerned about which card to get in the future. 2D is also very important if not more but im curious how bad the V5 5500 is compared to a G2 GTS?

3dfx V5 5500 - better image quality, no driver support

nVidia Geforce2 GTS - worse image quality, driver support, ability to be hacked into a Quadro2 (great for modeling)

Not all geforce cards have bad 2d, I have had a creative gef1 ddr, creative gef2 MX, herc gts and currently have an elsa ultra and all had good 2d. I have also had a voodoo 5500 pci running dual monitors and their was no difference in 2d quality. Its about time people laid off the 2d quality of nvdia cards, not all cards have the problem.

Get an Elsa GF2.

The bad 2D thing isn't the GeForce chip, it has to do with the board it's put on, and Elsa has consitently had good 2D.

Plus you can do the Quadro hack :)

The V5 is a gaming card, not a Pro-3D card and it wouldn't do very well as such.

I use a V5 5500 64MB AGP card for modelling already and it is speedy... the 2d image quality rocks, and the card's drivers are top-notch :).

The poor 2d has to do with the rf filter. You can disable or remove the filter (and break fcc laws) to achieve clearer 2d image or you can play with resolutions/ refresh rates.

A Voodoo5 is useless for 3D modelling you only choice is a GeForce2 or GeForce DDR. Its the lack of the ICD that is the problem.

I have a g450 the king of 2d and I have to say that I can't really notice a difference with my old geforce 256 ddr on lower resolutions, but can on higher. Also, like everyone is saying... go with gts for 3d modeling.

Yes the V5 has damn nice 2D and the GeForce is rather poor in that area, but keep in mind your likely not going to notice adifference until you get to high resolutions. At least 1280x1024 if not higher. Most any modern card looks fine in 2D until you hit 1600x1200, that's when the 2D quality becomes important.

As for 3D modeling the V5 is definitely NOT the card to ge there. Your much better off with even an MX for 3D modeling than a V5.

loosbrew, Ur GTS will display acceptable quality images at 1027x768. People's opinion of "Bad" image quality varies from person to person. If you've never seen anything except a GTS, than you'd prolly think it's all right. But if you've been weened on nothing but matrox cards all your life, then you try using a GTS at 1600x1200, it's gonna look like crap. But still acceptable.

I live with a GTS @ 1600 by 1200 without RF mods and its perfect. Yes the G200 looked slightly better but not as much of a nice jump as people make you believe.

Nvidias got this bug bulseye painted on them and everyone who can is taking a shot at them.

I always understood that 3d modeling requires different things from a card than 3d gaming does.. In last months Cadalyst magazine.. they didn't even mention geforce cards.. their budget card was the Radeon.. I don't know though.. check out www.3dcafe.com.. and maybe look around at some 3d sites that specialize in things like Maya and 3dstudio and stuff.. geforce cards are gaming cards.. for 3d modelling you want one of those expensive cards.. ie, wildcat, oxygen, elsa gloria.. but that's just what I hear.. I use 3dsmax with my AIW radeon, and it suits me just fine.. but then again, I dont' have any professional aspirations in 3d.. sooooo... mabye try a 3d specialized site..

nVidia is the king of consumer 3D modelling. Their OpenGL drivers are top notch.

I run a FIRGL1 for wire frame models, but have been looking at what is avaialable.
From most indications BFG10K is right.
Best modelling value is a Nvidia reference board GF2 GTS with resistor mod. I would go Elsa so you can use the latest GLORIA III bios and Drivers. $150
Come on GF3 hurry up so I can buy a PRO or ULTRA 64MB with a price drop.

Yeah, just like everybody did with 3dfx. Now that they're not around to kick around anymore, there are less targets to choose from. Well, really only 2 left ...
