How bad is subway for you?

I know its not a salad with oil and vinegar, but if you get something somewhat healthy from subway, it IS better than McDonalds, right?

It depends on what you get, genius. A steak and cheese with extra bacon is going to be bad for you. A veggie sub is going to be a lot less bad for you. Subway's subs run the gamut from "horribly unhealthy" to "pretty good for you", just like any restaurant. McDonalds has salads too, you know.

I meant their healthy options.

A grilled chicken sandwich from McDonalds is no where near as good for you as a grilled chicken sandwich you make at home.

Kind of wanted to know where subway fit in.

Lots of unnecessary salt, etc.

And those, too, can be unhealthy. I have much disdain for fast food, especially after watching Supersize Me.

But yeah, as much as Subway would like to market themselves as having nothing but healthy and fresh choices, some of it is probably worse than what's at the burger chains.

I eat there all the time

Get a sub with WHEAT bread, and then pick from the ones that say low fat and such....Get ones that arnt greasy, have bacon, or have cheese pouring off of it.

Not always. Blueberries and oranges taste damn good and are really good for you. Coincidentally, gasoline tastes horrible so it should be good for you right? Though I haven't seen too many studies that outline the positive health effects of ingesting petroleum-based products.

Especially if you get a foot long.

I haven't seen supersize me, but I've read Fast Food Nation. I remember people telling me to read that and I'd stay away from fast food forever. You know what, while reading the book, I got a craving for some McDonalds :) Yeah, I'm an unhealthy SOB.

It's pretty similar to your McD's analogy dude. The grilled chicken @ Subway is loaded with sodium (absolutley loaded, I bet more so than a grilled McD's chicken breast). However, as an option to say, a Big Mac, Subway has some fantastic choices.

A LOT of their food is very low in fat, however, you're still getting a high-carb experience when you go there. Not that that's necessarily bad, just keep in mind what you're getting.

Most of their deli-meats are low in fat. Most of their chicken options are low in fat.

To add fat you'd get things like cheese and mayo. To keep the fat low you'd omit both of those. Their Sweet-Onion sauce is low in fat but high in carbs (sugar), same with their honey-mustard sauce although between the two I'd go with the honey-mustard.

So, unless you want something completley dry, there's always going to be a little compromise.

Personally, I think this would be relatively healthy w/ good flavor:
6-inch Sweet-Onion Teriyaki Chicken, double meat (for the protein, good compromise between getting a full-sandwich that's not loaded in carbs)
On WHEAT or Honey Oat
No Cheese
Veggies of choosing
NO Sweet-Onion sauce (it's just called a sweet-onion Teriyaki Chicken sub)
I'd throw in a little low-fat mayo or a little ranch just for some flavor with a neglible fat increase.

I used to get this a lot when I was more concerned with my diet. It's good!

Depends on what you think is healthy...I shy away from oranges as they are high in sugar. Blueberries? I'm not really sure...just in general the two fruits I eat are apples and pears...and I stick with green vegetables...

Has a lot of sodium, otherwise it's common sense.. any normal sandwich (not meatball or chicken bacon ranch) isnt bad at all.

Oh man, Subway sponsored the half marathon I ran Saturday and we all got subs when we finished. Man, those sandwiches never tasted so good.

But I think Subway does stuff like this........get involved with people already pursuing healthy lifestyles so they look like a primary cause.

Most likely sodium nitrate for starters. If you care about that sort of thing. Lunch meat is high in salt as well.

Depends on whitebread vs whole wheat, cheese v no cheese, mayo v mustard, and what kind of veggie pickings you prefer.

Purely by calories, subway is probably better.

Other than Sodium, most of their offerings are pretty good. BTW, for Fast Food McDonald's is actually quite healthy. Not only do they have the nutrition information available, but with a little planning and non-ordering or removal of condiments, pretty much 80-90% of their menu is available to eat. Contrast that with pretty much any sitdown restaurant that will just kill your diet.

Subway kills me because of the Sodium. However, I probably eat it at least 3-4 times a week.

6inch on wheat (vinegar and mustard only condiments) with lots of veggies and I can use most meats, but I typically stick with turkey, ham, or chicken
bag of apples
diet coke and a water

Cheap, delicious, filling, and perfect for my diet

Oranges, as well as a lot of other fruits, are high in sugar but it's good sugar combined with a host of vitamins and minerals. You probably aren't going to acquire diabetes by eating your recommended serving of fruit every day. Blueberries, blackberries, strawberries, raspberries, etc are tremendously healthy. They are sweet, sure, but they contain a plethora of antioxidants and vitamins that will far outweigh any negative health effects. The bright fruits are in general very good for you. I like bananas and apples...too bad they get yucky so quickly if you keep them around for more than a few days.

Can't go wrong with the greens, though.

Subway is way too expensive for what they give you. ( which isn't much ).

I prefer blimpie.

But depending on what you get, it can be good or bad for you. :p

And besides that, subway tastes like CRAP. Any sandwich shop has better tasting sandwiches than subway.

Umm, apples have higher glycemic loads than oranges.

Blueberries are very good for you because of their antioxidative properties.

Whenever I eat at subway, I try to eat healthy by going with the grainy bread like Wheat or Honey Oat.

Then i'll get Ham or Roast Beef.

Then some American Cheese.

No Toasting please.

All Vegetables

No sauces.

Thank You.

Pretty healthy I think! And very tasty.
