How bad is rush hour around Philadelphia?

I have to figure out how early to leave for a trip to Philadelphia. I need to be there by 9am, on Market Street. I'm leaving from 3.5 hours away. How much extra time do I need to add for sitting in traffic?

I know the Schykill Expressway gets pretty busy, but you wouldn't be taking that coming from Virginia. I have no idea about the other roads.

the schykill sucks the big one. avoid it at allcost. Leaving philly it has taken me an hour or more just to get out. Getting in on my way to AC just as bad. If you are on 462 or the NJ turn pike its not as bad..but i hear it can be pretty ******.

Try to avoid rush hour.

as others mentioned, it really all depends on what direction you're coming from. The Schuykill (aka surekill) does suck. 95N usually isn't too bad. You'll probably hit traffic in Baltimore and near the MD/DE border as well. Deldot is doing construction on the toll plaza and it's a f'n mess. Also, as you're coming through DE take 495 instead of 95, it will merge back into 95 at the PA border and save you a few minutes.

I lived in SE Pennsylvania for 23 years. The Schuykill (I-76 between King of Prussia & Philly) is the worst road I've ever been on. When I moved down here to DC, all anyone told me about was the horrible traffic. I'm sure there are more people down here, but all the highways are 3-5 lanes.

These people don't know pain until they've driven on the 2 lane Schuykill in rush hour.

Then you're looking at the turnpike to the expressway... the expressway can get really really bad. I can see it from both my office window and the lounge in my house. The turnpike should be okay, but give yourself an hour and a half to do the full length of the expressway and another 30-45 minutes to get where you're going downtown.

Coming home from Philly reversing direction in evening rush will be a NIGHTMARE for you. I'd suggest getting dinner downtown and not leaving until 6:30+

Avoid going between 76 and 676 at ALL COSTS!!!! Use the ramps in the area of south street!!!

You might also want to consider parking in conshohocken or norristown and taking the R6 in. It'll probably be a little faster, a lot less stressful and half the cost between gas and parking

I concur. I live on the expressway and I've driven both the DC and baltimore beltways. The Schuylkill is the worst.

This might sound like a needlessly complicated way to do it, OP, but it is, in fact, excellent advice.

The R6 is my favorite of the Rs! I think it is like 35mins from Conshy to Suburban so its not bad, and its only $3.75 each way during peak hours which will definately be cheaper than parking.
