How bad is online cheating on the PC right now? I mean, really? Will the Xbox be different?

I don't know how easy it is and how many people do it, but let me give you an example...

The other night, a friend and I decide to try out some Quake II online for old time's sake. So we get on one of our old servers and what do we see? 9 red chicks all with rail guns, every one, and no, this was no railgun mod. It was like a laser light show. But what was disturbing was their accuracy! My goodness, anytime you were in sight of anyone you were instantly dead. I mean, EVERY single time. Never miss, EVER! It was strange. We decided to hang out for awhile and see if it was just chance... it wasn't... never did one rail gun shot EVER miss anyone as far as we could tell.

And what was up with everyone using the red chick character? That was strange. Does that mean something?

Anyway... is everyone just that good or is their some kind of "red chick aim bot" that everyone uses? And why does everyone go for the rail gun? Seemed strange to say the least.

To close, I just want to say this... I am really looking forward to the Xbox. Why? Well, glad you asked... now I'm not saying everyone on the PC platform is cheating, but I know it's at least possible, and with night like the other one, my faith is diminished for online gaming on that platform. Xbox on the other hand seems to be the perfectly even place to pit yourself against others. First, from what I understand, the Xbox won't be hack'able, at all. Second, everyone will have the exact same hardware, with probably the same frames per second and all that.

If when playing an Xbox game online someone makes a great shot, I will know that they made a great shot and not have to wonder. I don't know about you, but I'm starting to drool about the even and fair play the Xbox platform will deliver in the realm of online gaming.

Maybe I'm jumping to conclusions here... can anyone else shed some more light on this for me?

You got spanked because you've not played q2 in a long time and most of the people that are still playing it are big times fans and will have quite high accuracy most likely. Its possible they were cheatin, but I think they're just good frmo years of experience. If you believe the Xbox won't be hackable you believe win98 makes for a secure server 😉 Your frame rates might be the same but what about when one guy is on dialup and another on broadband? If the frame rates are like 30 or up I can cope, I can't cope with a ping of 400 when I'm up against a 30 😉

Nothing is unhackable. time will only tell how good the xbox will hold angainst the geek of the earth.

The xBox is going to be the easiest console to cheat on that has ever been created. Take a slightly modified P3, add in a slightly modified GF 3, mix in a little standard HD. BAM! you end up with a cheaters paradise.

Really? You guys think so? I thought since the game code was on the DVD rom that you won't be able to edit the files and all that. I'm pretty sceptical about the Xbox games being hackable and then being played online with that hacked code, but if you all say so. Do you think that or know it (big difference). Are any of you hackers or know how they work and henceforth can say why it is a hackable platform?

I just don't see how they will do it.

About the Quake II... then why did EVERYONE use that same red chick character? And why did nobody EVER miss (even each other). We never sited even one miss from a railgun. We even watched a few of the players from their perspective. Never miss, ever, never ever ever, not even one time... we watched for a LOOOOONG time... this skill or something else?

Smells fishy to me.

Also, I would like to see some of you ring in about the state of online gaming on the PC and if there is cheating going on and to what degree.

I seen on Voodoo Extreme where the id Software people were coming out with a patch for Quake III that, in id's Software's words... "addresses all the cheating" and a few other minor fixes, but that was the main one. If there's no cheating, then why are they addressing that in a patch? Hmm...

Then, I hear about some who do it in Unreal Tournament awhile back, but I can't remember, seems it was official, but I can't confirm. I never seem to notice it myself in this game, but who knows.

What about Counter-Strike? I hear over there it's really bad. Is that all true?

Diablo? Oh, it was insane there... killing you in town, duping, all that nonsense. Safe to say it was a FACT in Diablo, dunno anyone who would defend that game not having cheaters.

Any other game anyone knows of that cheating happens in? And what exactly do they do? what benefits (ie: it "aim's" for them) do they get, but more improtantly... WHY would anyone want to cheat? I mean, if the aim bot thing is true, why would you use it? I mean what do you do, run around just clicking your mouse without even trying to do anything? How would that be any fun? Seems that would bore even the most diehard cheater rather quickly.

Is the state of online PC gaming really gone down to this level or is most of this just from the minds of people who can't deal with losing?

I know the other night caught my attention BIG TIME! I would have to be a naive fool not to suspect some unfair play happening there.

I don't care how good anyone is at Q2, or any FPS...when it comes to rail guns or anything of that type of weapon...no one can have a 100% accuracy...they will miss some shots...i think they were cheating.

I just HAVE to know... WHHHHHYYYYY were all nine people using that one chick, who is dressed in a red suit?

That HAS to mean something!

Also, there we're a few times when other characters came in, that weren't "red chick" characters, but I suspect they were straight up players... but after walking into the laser light show the red chick were putting on, they soon left. It was insanity... instantly die'ing every second.

When I asked them about it, they gave me the usual "cause you suck and I rule" limbo. But I stayed and watched them... never missing, I think my suspicions are right.

One last time, why red chicks? Are they needed to use the aim bots or what?

Could they have been in some type of clan? Maybe that's why they had the red chick skin on.

I've played 1v1 with the Q3Arena master fatal1ty and I've seen him rail me perfectly every time during games. It's a feat that I'll never be able to accomplish, but it can be done. And like Soybomb said, if you haven't played in a long time and they play on a regular basis, then that's probably why they seemed so good.

Not ruling it out entirely, but why would a huge group of people all get together, wearing the same skin, using bots, to play Quake 2, using the rail gun, if it weren't some kinda clan/rail battle?

The red chicks with railguns killing you could easily be a few things:

1. You forced player models and all their models became the chick.
2. They used an infamous bot (z, rat, etc).
3. Damn fine skill.

I have railed the grappling guys before and its not too difficult, so I'm sure its easy to hit someone who hasn't played Q2 in a while. The bots make using the railgun like playing a kids game -- you don't even need to aim, it'll do it all for you!

Cheating with Xbox will happen. The Xbox will have an ethernet port, so someone will figure out how to talk with it (if its not already talkable by default) and someone will modify files left on the hard disk. Its pretty much a guarantee that config files, etc will be left on that spacious 8gig HD, so if you can talk with it, you can mod it.

try some other servers... if you keep getting killed, it's prollyy your lack of playing for so long 🙂

With CS, there were a few times we would catch ppl using a model cheat or whatnot (ie, theres a huge spike coming out of you, so they know you're commin from a good distance). The servers i played on didn't seem to have too much of a problem.. i played so much at one point, that i was accused of cheating myself 🙂 Newbies don't seem to understand that some guns had zoom, and when three of them are standing next to each other behind a wooden box.. their heads stick up a little 🙂

2. They used an infamous bot (z, rat, etc).

That'd be my guess too. And they all used the same character map so they could
get their digs shooting up the occasional lurker, instead of blasting each other.
(One thing about cheats, it makes for boring play if everybody else is using the
same hacks)

As long as you can build a strong player community, a few cheaters can spoil but
not completely ruin the online gaming experience. (Unless they are able to hack
the servers themselves and change the rules for the game Universe)

Well, I didn't have the force model on because like I said, there were a few others coming on (and then shortly leaving) that had different models.

Do they have to use that red chick character to use the aim bot or something?

Also, although it had been awhile since I played Q2, I'm constantly playing Quake III, Unreal Tournament, Rogue Spear and the like, my "skills" are not low (to be humble about it).

What OS will the Xbox be using? If it's anything like Windows (same APIs, etc), it should be easy to hack the games, 'specially if the xbox has a built-in harddrive like originally planned.

ah, but q2 is a completely different game than q3 😉

no really, if you haven't played it in a while, you can be a bit rusty... each version of quake's gameplay was slightly different.. or at least it felt that way to me. just pointing out a possibility.. altho from you description, it does seems like cheating.
