How bad is one or 2 beers a day if you're trying to watch your diet/weight?

If you're already watching how much and what you eat, how much effect would an additional one or 2 beers a day do?

It all depends on how many calories your body requires to maintain its current weight, and how many you are already consuming aside from the beer.

You must have no experience.

Do you want to lose weight? Make sure you exercise and everything will be fine. You might have to reduce caloric intake in other ways though.

It really depends on the beer, doesn't it? Light beers are obviously going to be better for your gut.

beer has about the same calories and carbs as a can of soda

if you are seriously watching your weight, the first thing you'd phase out is soda. read the thread about soda and obesity

Yep.

Except beer has nutritional value (roughly equivalent to bread) and soda has none.

Obviously though, if you're having weight issues, you should cut back on your alcohol intake just like you would with everything else.

The thing about beer is that it will not only provide you with excess calories, there are chemicals in it that will temporarily stunt protein synthesis and fat burning. This is why people get the beer belly specifically from just beer.

You can't make whiskey without making beer first. :)

I think miller lite is 90 something calories per can. I'm not sure if 16oz can or not. For comparison, I think a can of mountain dew has some odd 150 or 170 calories. A can of sugar cane Jones soda has about 190.

I had to go to an Alcohol awareness class when I was 19 as a result for having beer in my car when I got pulled over. During the class there was a lot of information, and they said an average size male can drink up to 4 beers (or regular alcoholic drinks) a day but not to exceed 20 in a 7 day period without causing harm to the liver or other parts of the body. So aside from the extra calorie intake 2 a day is perfectly fine (although by some people's standards it makes you an alcoholic).

Plus the calories from alcohol and fats that bind to it.

1-2 beers a night won't kill a program, but it probably will keep a lot from a six-pack.

I've never seen that said anywhere. Usually people get the beer belly from eating the snacks that go along with drinking beer (pizza, hot wings, etc.).

I read it from Mens Health magazine. They did a scientific study on why beer gives you the beer belly. It may be online on their website, but I'm not sure.

I rad a similar article and it agreed that alcohol stopped fat burning. Alcohol is treated as a toxin and is immediately processed by the body. This puts all other processing (fat burning and digestion) on hold until all the alcohol is processed out. So the wings, etc you eat while drinking dont get processed until after the alcohol is taken care of. Since alcohol still has calories, the excess (being the wings, chips, etc) gets converted into fat based on the calories in vs calories out equation.

That said, I generally drink 1 to 2 beers per week, usually on special occasions only.

I buy your explination but still doubt Mikey's. Your explination makes sense to me but also applies to all alcohol.

I cut beer out of my diet during the week just so I could get some definition back. The weekends are no holds barred though!

I agree it applies to all alcohol (including that 1 glass of red wine). That does not mean that the 1 glass of wine doesnt have any heart benefits though. You can still get a "beer belly" drinking nothing but jack and cokes. It'll just be mainly from the coke.

I used to do the same thing...but I found I'd consume like 5000 calories on a Saturday from food and beer....thus negating my entire weeks worth of hard work!

I'm training for Ultimate Regionals, which to me means no alcohol during the week and liquor on the weekends, no beer. But I normally I probably only have 2 beers on the weekdays and then party hard either friday or saturday night.

As long as you excercise, you aren't going to get fat off of two beers a day.

As someone said earlier, that depends entirely on how much you're taking in and burning already.
