How bad is it to eat some food long after they've expired?

I found a small, unopened bag of Cheetos from 2004. I opened it and it looks and smells fine. Will I get sick or something if I eat it? What about a can of Coke from 2003?

Usually the date indicates when they suggest eating by if you want it to taste the best. After that date it just tastes bad.

taste / smell the coke and you should know pretty quickly whether it's gone flat and/or fermented.

Cheetos and Coke are made to be hazardous to life. Funny, since they're supposed to be food products. But in terms of germs, it can vary by the person. I routinely eat food that's sat out 24 hours...if it's pizza, up to 48 hours. Often not even reheated. I have never had food poisoning in my life. I bet if they smell fine, you'll be fine. We have a little tin of Safeway ground cloves that expired in 1978, and they still smell like new.

Just tasted em. Just like new. I forgot how much I dislike cloves. Bleah! Curse you, OP! :|

Well, did eat the Cheetos, they tasted fine and weren't stale or anything. The Coke seemed a little flat but otherwise seemed fine.

I found it in a cabinet in my bedroom while I was cleaning.

Spend a dollar and get yourself a new bag dude.

Don't treat your body like that, it's absurd to take a risk with your health over a food that has no nutritional value whatsoever.

I don't know about you guys, but I, for one, don't see anything wrong with consuming food that expired 2, 3, or even 15 years ago.

Funny story: My girlfriend brought over some yogurt and said it was in the fridge. I finally found it in the back corner of the fridge and ate it. I didn't think it tasted that great, but it wasn't horrible or anything. It looked like normal blueberry yogurt to me, although the color of the blueberries changed a bit. My girlfriend asked me how it was, and when I told her she said that the one I ate wasn't what she brought over. I looked at the container of what I ate, and it was vanilla yogurt that expired a LONG time ago.

I think it's safe to say that most folks here have probably either "almost" gulped down or maybe even *have* gulped down that gnarly carton of milk that had turned to "chunks"!!

;)

heh.. I'm sure the Cheetos have enough preservatives to have a halflife of a twinkie. And I seriously don't think the Coke would ever go bad, as long as it's sealed. The "best by" dates on soda are BS. They're only stamped on there so the stores don't buy a years worth of Coke when they are offered a big sale from the wholesalers. (like the have on the 4th of July)

Have you ever tasted a soda and thought "Ewww.. This tastes OLD!" :)
