How bad is it to breathe in the crap from ceiling tiles?

I was doing some work in the office and when I opened one of the ceiling tiles about 5 pounds of the stuff fell on my head. I must've breathed in a whole bunch too. I;m still coughing.

Question is how bad is that stuff for me? I know it's not good but what potential stuff could it cause?

Depending on the age of the building you might have some cause for concern, but with most buildings nowadays up to stringent code(asbestos): Don't worry. But call the company listed on the back of the tile, or ask the janitor/maintainence man for peace of mind.

Windogg,

If it were really a problem, I'd already be dead. I've swapped out several hundred of them over the years.

I wouldn't worry too much about it Windogg. 🙂

After a minor flood in the house, the ceiling tiles in one room had to be replaced. They got shuffled out to the back yard for disposal, and I got the unenviable job of shovelling them up. Dusty work, but I'm still around so it hasn't killed me yet. 😛

Oh man, I know how it is taking that stuff out, especially when they get wet. I had to clear out an entrire basement full of that stuff where half of it was soaked due to a leakage in the pipes. It was plain dusty, musty, and mushy.

probably not any worse than the radiation from your monitor, or the chemicals in your food, or the contaminates in your drinking water, and so on and so on...

Thanks everyone. 🙂

The tiles are made from that foam stuff that crumbles really easily. The building was fully renovated about 5 years ago so I'm not concerned about aesbestos.
