How bad is gossip at your office?

Over here at times it seems I live in the glass house. You can't tell anything to anybody without 5 other people knowing this by the end of the week. And it's not like I have a problem with that, it's just what possesses people to discuss others? Especially fairly trivial events in their lives. I don't even understand how such an exchange would start?

- Hey, did you hear what Argo did for Christmas? He spent it with his girlfriends family!
- No way! That's unthinkable.

That's the best I could come up with. And this isn't the first time. It ranges from dates, to weekend trips to vacation plans. Wow. Just wow.

act "crazy" and you'd be surprised at how distant people will stay from you.

Works wonders when tryign to find a table in the luchroom. People gladly get up and leave the table for you. If you act even crazier, they offer to buy you lunch and stuff so you won;t hurt them.

I'm really baffled about it. You tell person A about a trivial event in your life. 2 days person B (whom you never told about it) asks you about that event. Now I would like to hear person A tell person B about this. How does the conversation get on that subject. I can see talking about a close friend to another close friend but people you barely now? That's just odd.

I would go crazy. Such disrespect would make me go insane.

Apparently I banged a woman in the bathroom at the holiday party. Funny thing is...I don't remember that.

That is how bad the gossip is here.

Reminds me of this quote:

Great minds discuss ideas, average minds discuss events, small minds discuss people.

I don't remember who wrote it. I'm continually disgusted by how so many in a professional environment choose to gossip, but it's usually propagated by those who have little life of their own.

gossip is really bad at my office. Only 7 of us in the bank. I have even been written up on rumors and no facts.

Unprofessionalism can take on many different meanings.

I have strict rules applying to gossip in the office, it is prohibited (in the employee handbook) and termination will result for it's use.

Nah, there are only like 8 people that are here in the office. And six of us are male, so there is very little gossip ... despite that, we know everything about each other because we go to lunch together and go out drinking pretty regularly together. Kinda like a Guy's Club. Poor chicks.

I enjoy when people at work talk about their families, pets, hobbies, vacation plans. I like it when they share a joke or amusing story about something that's happened in their daily lives.I don't like it when they group together to assinate the character of another co-worker who isn't there to defend themselves or to assign negative motives to another co-workers actions.

Sharing makes work peers feel sort of like family, malcious gossip makes people feel like crap.

There are a few individual in particular that I have learned never to say anthing to. Secondly, the jealously and people trying to out do one another. Pretty lame. I have learned to just come to work, talk only about work related things and nothing about my personal life.

well put.

the gossip and backstabbing at my workplace is disgraceful. It is not uncommon for other managers to come over to my IT deparment when out manager is off and simply canabalize our whole staff because "rumor has it that we are having too much fun" and send us off to do trivial tasks while the owner of the company rolls up his sleves to beat our asses in because our work isn't done on time.

I have enemies here that I can't even begin to understand the motivations of.

That's the hardest part of it all, if I can understand somebody's motives for trashing me,I can cope with a little better.Somebody speaking badly of me without any sort of rational reason is crazy making.

I work with all women; they are always talking about each other.

The absolute best is they act all happy-dappy but when someone is out they start talking about how much they dislike that person.
It?s a lot of fun being the only guy in the department.
