I'm going to have my wisdom teeth pulled out in a couple of months too. He said I need surgery, so I'll probably be asleep :) Hopefully, I won't feel much...

What does impacted mean?

It means that the teeth are below the gum line.

Actually, it means they are coming in at an angle and will eventually (if not already) push into the teeth in front of them. Very painful, and it really kills any hopes of having straight teeth.

Put it this way - the 24 hours of agony you put up with having them pulled is FAR better than the lifetime of problems you'll have if you keep them in.

I had mine done when I was 17. I only had 3 anyway. 1 was impacted.

Impacted means growing or coming up on an angle towards another tooth.

I had surgery for mine. Didn't take too long, but they had 2 back-up doctors just in case because i have a heart condition.

The fun began after i got home and the pain killers wore off. Plus with surgery they have to use disolvable stitches. It makes eating and drinking a real pain. That only lasted a week though. They did give me a perscription for 400mg motrin. That sure made things less painfull.

Good luck though. I hope everything turns out ok.

My sister just had hers pulled. She was in a lot of pain for almost a week. Her cheeks were puffy and had small bruises on them.

having them pulled when they are impacted is much worse than having them pulled for being out of line or something like that....you won't feel anything when they take them out, but sometime later that day you are going to be in some pain....get some good painkillers via perscription before you go home!!!!!

without the teeth you have gaps in the back of your mouth for a few weeks but without getting them pulled they will get cavities and just rot away while still in your mouth. think about it

count on being in some pain and also count on a few days off from work or school,Ihad iv valium and gas that's supposed to reduce swelling but I was a mess afterwards for a couple days. You might want to have somebody who can check on you after the surgery around as well.

<--- had 4 impacted wisdom teeth and still winces thinking of it

Very much depends on the person & surgeon. Mine were taken out about 18 months ago - and yes they were impacted. It was a farce. The surgeon went in, took all 4 out, and I went home. I had a prescription for a bunch of kick ass pain meds. I used one just because I was bored basically and the rest went to waste. I was eating a burger a day or two later. I had some swelling in my gums but otherwise it was exceptionally easy going.

Great. I have 4 impacted wisdom teeth. Is there a big risk to going to sleep when they take them out?

Yeah, I meant to say that it refers to teeth that can't emerge properly.

I'm dumb. :eek::eek:

I don't like local anesthetic, I hate going to the dentist because I don't know where to look while he's doing stuff in my mouth. Am I supposed to look in his eyes, close them, or look to the side? It's kind of awkward...

Amen to that.. I went through hell waiting for the impacted teeth to break through the gums because I didn't want to take the surgery, I should've had em taken out when I was 18 but waited a year out of stubbornness.. that was a stupid move, the agony of the teeth trying to come in was worth than any bit of the pain after they were taken out.. my advice is to bite the bullet and save yourself further agony (especially with impacted teeth)

I had 4 heavily impacted (severe angle) and managed to actually have very little pain, I went to a Dental Surgeon that had good recommendations and he was very good, I would suggest you look for someone of similar experience (get a good referral).. As for the post-surgery I was no lazy moron (which is 85% of the time why people experience lots of pain according to the surgeon) and followed the directions of the surgeon down to the letter (cold compress on the cheeks, antiseptic swabs, salt water rinsing of the mouth every 3 hours [more than was necessary but definitely helped], no solids for 4 days (though I actually waited a week).. with that said I only used 4 pills of my pain killers, and had about 12 leftover for fun ;), I really wasn't in much pain at all throughout the week.. I didn't neglect taking the Ibuprofen either..

** Make damn sure you tell the surgeon if you are prone to gagging easily (as in if you throw up easily when your finger is placed in the back of your mouth) -- I didn't and for about two weeks my eyes were not in pain but were bloody and had very dark circles around them.. I wasn't in any pain from it but I looked like hell for two weeks till it cleared up, made me look like I just fought someone in the 'Fight Club' or something LOL..

---> Oh and BTW as for the moment of the surgery itself, it's absolutely the funniest thing ever.. they hook you up, you hear your heartbeat, they stick the IV into you and then they put the oxygen mask on, put the anaesthetic or whatever into your IV, you count to 12 and you won't make it past 8.. 3 seconds later you wake up kinda cranky and the surgery is done :) you remember nothing of it and your mouth is filled to the brim with gauze..

If they give you a little nitrous oxide + a barbituate, its not at all bad having them pulled. I was having a good ol time during the extraction. Its after the stuff wears off...then its bad, though it depends on how tough the extraction is and how much bruising they do to the soft tissue and bone. If they give you some good pain meds like Vicodin ES or Percodan, that will take the edge off and make the pain bearable, though it still hurts. A little pain builds character anyway.

Have them all done at the same time, because you won't want to go back.

You'll regret it.. trust me you WILL regret it.. unless of course they fit back there and you can manage to brush them for the rest of your life.. otherwise you might get an absess..

I've had 3 friends who had theirs taken out, and they all got knocked out... however, my dad's an anesthesiologist, and he won't let me get knocked out for my surgery next week :( He said that whenever you can choose local over general, do it, since there can be less complications? I dunno, that's my two cents (or rather, my dad's :p)
