How bad is a grade of a W?

Aimster

Lifer
I have to drop this one class. It is just too hard for me.

The professor told me she would give me a grade of W.

The rest of my grades are As.

Nothing is wrong with a W. Its just a withdrawal grade not a failing one. It wont do anything to your GPA.

W's shouldn't cause you any problems unless a future employer looks at your transcript and you have like 10+ W's or something. Don't worry.. better a W than a C, D or F.

It shouldn't affect your GPA immediately but at some schools a W or incomplete will go to an F after a certain amount of time. This varies by school so I'd check it out with your school's registrar just to be safe.

I got into law school with 4 W's on my college transcript, don't worry 🙂

that's one thing i never realized until i graduated from college. i've always been one to finish what i start, no matter what. but when it comes to grades, you gotta be smart about it too.

AFAIK W doesn't go to an F, I does. The only thing a W will do to you is force you to explain why you dropped it to anyone that asks. It basically looks like you were going to fail and gave up when seen on your transcript.

i wished i got a couple of those Ws. but instead i got Cs and Ds...urgh. ended up retaking the course to overwrite the grades.

W's only hurt if you withdrew within a subject that you're going into grad school, i.e. withdrew from a psychology class when you want to be in a MS/PH.d psy program. Otherwise, it's not looked at. Professional schools wont really care either.

Still better to have a W than a C or less in a major-required class, I think.

Edit: Provided you don't have too many Ws, anyway.

From what I know it's not too bad. Better than a C. But it always looks fishy if you have too many W's

Definitely use your withdrawal and pass/fail if the class is too hard for you.
Once you took the load off, you will do a lot better in the other classes.

people who look at ur transcript wont know why u got the W . it couldve been for family emergency or whatever. but yea, too many will look bad.
