How bad is a glossy screen outdoors?

Hi,

I've read some commetns on this, but am curious as to how bad it really is. Is it anoying, or is it just straight unuseable?

The reason I ask is that I have a glossy NEC for my desktop and I love it so much more than my old matte. So, naturally, I was going to order truelife for my laptop and then read some negative comments regarding the use of these outdoors.

I do plan on working outdoors occasionaly and if it just annoying, I could deal with tha. However, if it is unuseabnle, that would be a major issue for me.

Appreciate anyone's experiences.

If I'm in any kind of sun and I'm not in the shade, the screen is almost unuseable at the highest brightness. In the shade, IIRC (been a bit too cold lately to use my laptop outside), it's a little better.

It has to be shaded. And, so does a matte screen for that matter.

Glossy is generally better outdoors, so long as you can avoid glare. That's because they appear brighter than matte screens. However, glare will completely kill your ability to see the screen, so if you can't avoid glare, then matte would be better.

Everything has pretty much been said already, but...

When I go 'war driving', with my lappy on the passenger seat, my glossy panel is NO problem at all, even in the middle of the day. However...

If I set my lappy on a window sill in an airport, or whatever, in direct sunlight... forget about it!

Personally, I don't think 'glossy' makes any difference, except it looks 100% better, 100% of the time.

In direct sunlight, you'll basically be flying blind, no matter what you have... ;)
