How bad is a desktop P4 in a notebook?

I'm gettig a Compaq 2525US from Compaq as a replacement for a Hot Deals scam a few months ago, & a 2525US is what they're sending me as a replacement.

Evidently Compaq chose to use a desktop CPU in this model & I've heard it's a poor choice on their part as a CPU primarily because of the significantly reduced battery life.

What kind of battery life can I expect from it?

ooh not good battery life. The desktop P4s suck up a lot of power and tend to produce more heat. Considering my IBM X21 (P3M 800) lasts about 3.5 hrs... I'd guess the desktops would max out at 2 and a half hours, Max?

I'd say about 2 hours max, less if you're doing real cpu intensive stuff. Also they produce a lot more heat.

I have a P4M-1.6 and it only lasts and it lasts around 2 hours. I wouldn't expect too much from a desktop CPU

If battery is not your main concern, than regular P4 processor should be fine.

The good thing about P4-M CPUs is that they adjust their speed accordingly to what you're doing, therefore tremendously saving the battery life. My friend's Toshiba laptop, which is based on regular P4 - 2.2, lasts about an hour, while my Thinkpad T30 can easily go for 3-3.5 hours on a single charge.

I hope this helps,

That system I have seen average 1hour. Also be careful not to cover any vents as the P4 Desktop chip in a laptop gets hot enough to fry a hotdog litteraly. Should work okay though if you keep a good air flow going through it.
