Almost did that to a crappy little ford festiva rental on the Alaskan haul road to the north slope. Stopped in a little place called Cold Foot about 50 miles N. of the Artic Circle. Pumps had 2 nozzles. Typically in the US, the diesel nozzle is green, so I tried to put the other one in, but it was to big to fit. The labels on the pump were barely legible. One of the attendents there said something like "Yea, people do that all the time, we just dropped the tank on a diesel pickup last week after he pumped gas into it."
When we came back, we had to get a new tire, and there was a nice new dodge diesel pickup sitting in the shop. Got to talking to the guy, and turned out he did the same thing ... put the green nozzle in, and pumped gas into it. So they were dropping the tank to drain it ... was gonna cost him several hundred. But this is a place where they charge about $5 each way for towing, and it's about 175 miles from Fairbanks. I think the whole thing was a scam by that place to make money off the tourists ... if it was happening all the time, you'd think they would label ot better.
