How bad are Cendyne drives other than LITEON?

I just got back from OM with a 48x cendyne Cd-rw drive. They didn't have any LTR-* drives so I settled for the AOPEN drive (model 48x12x50). I've been searching and everyone has been saying the Benq and AOpen drives suck. But are they that bad? Anyone out there have a positive experience with them? I don't plan on reading copy protected discs, overburning and I don't care about MT. Rainer support. I just need to use it in my HTPC linux box to burn VCDs, burn audio cds and rip music. I don't feel like driving all over creation to get a liteon, if this drive is going to work fine. The drive no longer remains free if I have to spend $20 in gas finding a good one.

thanks in advance,

Richard

Cendyne = LiteOn.

In fact when I boot my PC, during POST, the firmware says Lite-On.

I've had Cendynes that are Aopens and Benqs.
Two words...DON'T BOTHER!
I even gave Aopen a pass but now the thing just buzzes. Won't even write a couple of times. I'll be ordering a Lite-On or Plextor.

I've had Benq, AOPEN, and Lite-on as rebadged units. The lite-on is by far the best drive of the three. I would not pay $ for the other two if I had the option of knowing before buying. Just my 2 cents.

if you look on the back of the Cendyne Box, at the bottom of the spec list it shoudl say:

Model #: LTR xxx (some number)

that means its a LiteOn, if it just says like 32xXx or something speeds list, its an Aopen or other brand.
igot my Cendyne 32x with the LTR model # and its a liteon :) works great. havent tried the othe rbrands

my Cendyne 48X has served me well so far. Burns fast and I haven't had any issues...worth the $10 I got it for after rebate. I don't think mine is a lite-on, but maybe it is since it seems to be doing well?

Don't plan on using the AOpen drive for playing audio CD's. The drive is very loud, and playing audio CD's, it spins at full speed, with the data-read indicator light blinking on occasionally. Very annoying.

I had an aopen 12x10x32 and it was a very god drive. The only drawback is noise. Aopen is among the noisiest drives..... I can't comment about BenQ..... but if you have to choose, cyberdrive makes awesome drives... cheap, fast and quiet, way quieter than lite-on.
