How are you supposed to know to not follow the directions?

I installed an Iomega CD-RW last night with Adaptec EZ CD Creator software. I made a CD from songs on the computer and it was a snap. Today I tried to make one using CDs and couldn't because the darn thing froze up every single time I tried.

I called Iomega Support and all they could tell me to do was to remove and re-install. Did it twice, no help.

Finally I called Radio Shack and asked them about it and the boy there was very helpful. He told me not to pay any attention to the instructions about when to insert the CD and what you could and couldn't do, it lies. I did as he said and downloaded all the songs first and then copied them from my music folder. He also had told me to insert the bland CD-R before even opening the program even though the instructions say not to insert it until after you click "Create CD". He was right, if I wait until the instructions say to, the CD gets ejected with a "Not enough memory" message.

Later I mentioned this to a friend and she said, "Oh yeah, you have to do this and this etc. contrary to the instructions." Everything she said was correct.

I know the way they write the instructions may work for some machines, but how come the tech support doesn't tell you this stuff when you call, if it's kind of common knowledge to people who've used the software for awhile?

Anyone had a similar experience with another type of software?
