I'm looking into gettin a 80 gig external USB hd or so. How are they? How long do they last? Anyone have recommendations?

I can't imagine how long it would take to copy 80Gigs through a pipe that small =-O

I'm guessing since it's a hard drive, it's probably like any other in terms of reliability. But performance is going to be down the crapper.

i have a 10 gig USB HD and its pretty good, transfering 600 meg files take maybe 5 minutes...iam using a laptop USB enclosure with a lappy HD...

the new laptops these day do come with fire wire...don't they.....check has he/she got it...
USB is not that fast.....
sure u can do 600 megs in 5 min (300 sec) ? wasn't the max transfer rate like 1.5 Mb/s?

Many current laptops have firewire built in. Even if it doesn't, you can buy a cardbus firewire card from numerous manufacturers.
