its one of those new methods of spam. You should disable windows messenging service. I forget how to do it. These types of ads reallly relalllly suck.

are they just going via IP? like say my ip is 12.12.12.12.12 are they going 12.12.12.12.12. then 12.12.12.12.13 so fourth so on?

this is quite irritating!

Is this the one where my firewall is asking "windows explorer is trying to access the internet" ?

I too would like to disable this annoying thing.

edit>> it appears mine was due to a setting in IE6

Ripped from www.tweakxp.com:

If you do not use Windows Messenger then why not uninstall it. Every time you start up your computer, Messenger also starts up which can slow everything down and use up more system resources. To uninstall it:

1. Click on the Start button and select Run.
2. Type "RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove" in the text box and click OK. You will see a progress bar appear shortly as it deletes its files and it will then ask you to reboot. After the reboot the program will be gone.

Wrong windows messenger, this is the popup case of the windows messaging system, not the msn messenger type messenger in Winxp, called 'windows messenger'.

To stop getting the popups, just goto administration/services in the control panel, and stop then disable 'messenger' service on startup.

Edit: This only works in NT/2k/XP :p

Either way, the "RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove" was what I've been looking for. I tried removing that 'hide' option in that other file, Sysoc.inf, but it wouldn't show in the add/remove programs section. Yay. (and ditto on the above post, they are two seperate things, one is netsend, right?)

r u using xp? i had something like that happen to me... my bud rutchtkim told me about a way to stop it. basically... right click on "my computer", go to manage. then in the new window, on the left side, go to "services and apps"... then services. now on the right side, scroll down and look for "messenger" and disable that. it worked for me.

Use net send from the command line. The syntax if I remember right is: net send [name|ip] [message]

Edit: If you're on a win9x system you'll have to use winpopup.exe I believe. Net send only works with NT/2k/XP.

Nope, how else do you think they'll be able to annoy you back. ;)

Of course, you could just change your computer name temporarily :p

Yes, but you lose the ability to do other stuff. Like transfer files via msn messenger. Give and take...... ;)

Recently a tool has become available that makes it very easy to send SPAM and other messages directly to some Windows computer in the form of a "Messenger Service" Pop-up message.

This is *not* something brand new, as here is a TechTV article about the exact same item, dating back to March 2002.
http://www.techtv.com/screensavers/answerstips/story/0,24330,3374542,00.html

Disabling this service in no way changes the functioning of any Instant Messenger.

To disable it in Windows XP:

Click on the "Start" button.
Right-Click on "My Computer"
Choose "Manage" from the menu that appears.
In the left column Highlight "Services and Applications"
In the right column Double-Click on "Services".
Double-Click on the service called "Messenger".
Click the "Stop" button to stop the service.
Change the "Startup Type:" to "Manual"
Click "Apply".
Click "OK".
Close "Computer Management"

The service should no longer accept those pop-up messages.

Just a note - end users, feel free to disable Messenging Service.
But if you're a corporate user - do it and I will personally knock your connection down into the oversaturated 10MBit crap-cabling line we hung ten years ago.

Sure, it blocks net send. And any other message from your network administration, such as:

"Server X will be going down at 4:00 pm for maintainance and repairs. This could take up to two hours - so until then, please log onto one of the other 13 servers available." ... @ 4pm ... *ring ring* Bitch moan whine it's not working!

Stupid users. I'm turning into a BOFH. :|
