I have one of those on the side panel of my case. There are three pieces. There is a bottom piece with screw holes, the foam filter insert, and the top shroud that snaps onto the bottom piece directly. This design facilitates removing and cleaning the filtering foam piece.

How do you make sure the foam piece doesn't disintegrate in the water when you wash it?

Most filter foams are hydrocarbon based. They won't dissolve. About the only commonly used foam that will dissolve in water are those starch based packing peanuts.
