I just crashed my 75GXP and looking to buy the new 60GXP. How are the new ones? The 75GXP was a pretty piece of crap when it died.

Any other recommendations for a drive? I'm looking for SPEED and PERFORMANCE. 7200Rpm preferred.

Well from what I've been reading, I've heard that some drives been failing.

I don't know how much, but I'm pretty sure you can go check out StorageReview.com and read up on it at their forums.

The 60GXP drives are very slightly faster then the older 75GXP, not a great deal of difference in terms of performance. Whether the 60GXP has improved upon the questionable reliability of the 70GXP's in as yet relatively unknown. Thus far it does not seem to be suffering from the inordinate number of RMA's that the 75GXP's were known for.

Other possible alternatives for high performing 7200 RPM IDE drives are the Western Digital WD400BB and WD800BB. Both drive models offer performance very close to that of the IBM 60GXP. Also the WD800BB tops out at 80GB whereas the 60GXP's top out at only 60GB.

I dunno..I'm afraid of IBM since they haven't had the balls to come forward and explain the flaws in the GXP drive to us.
Was it a quality control issue ??? A design flaw ??
I am putting my money on Maxtor these days but their reputation in the past was less than perfect too ???
The Diamond max seems like it has held up nicely since introduced so I'll be using these for the time being.
They are plenty fast but are not as quiet as a GXP.. not obnoxious at all...ya just know it's there and can guess ( hear) what it is doing............if that makes sense ???

I have a Cheetah on the way...big money for small volume but a workhorse none the less. My IDE's...45 GXP and diamond max 40 will relax and hold data, pics, Mp3, Web folders and that sort of crap...Without the burden of an OS they should last A LOOOOOONG TIME.

I have bought a 60GXP 60Gb hd right one month ago. I have performed 26663 points under Sisoft Sandra 2001se and don't remember how much with other tools. They are very silent and fast: i load games in less than half the time it took before with my old Quantum lct10.
Always disk scanning for viruses if faster, pics loading and so on.
I have it closed in a mobile rack that refresh it with a little fan behind....

What about the warrranty? I heard that IBM does not provide warranty for OEM drives bought from other online vendors?
