RIP General Smedley.

Was another one of the old greats of his time.

Semper Fi.

I was going to mention issues even way prior to that, but I would just get boring and it is common knowledge anyway, or you would think so.

OK, without going into too much detail, I got drafted and served in Vietnam in a CBT Engr. Bn Hvy unit. I also served in Desert Shield and Desert Storm, and, although not serving in-theater, supported Iraqi Freedom out of Italy and Turkey.

I therefore think I still don't qualify to be included in the first post I quoted you in. ;)

I was not even talking about you. I don't know why you can't seem to comprehend that. Again, do you want some sort of prize?

Do you want a cookie for pretending like you have to serve in the military to be able to determine what the military is used for? Making ignorant blanket statements, and being anti military for no good reason. Except for its the cool thing to do now, like the last post on page 1.

What's funny, boss, is that you bitch and moan about people who haven't served in the military saying things about it, and then when told that someone was in the military, act like it doesn't matter.

Nice flip-flop, Master Sergeant.

Some people who haven't, act like they know the entire story. Like their opinion is fact, when often times they do not have a clue.

It is not a flip-flop, I didn't even read his post. I said as much in my post. I stopped after the first few, and replied. It was not bitching and moaning, I made a simple statement. I'll say it again... good try.

OK, I see where you're coming from, and for all intents and purposes, my one and only concern was and still is that you haven't acknowledged that I didn't belong in that group (that I suspected) you pigeonholed me in, even after I told you up front why I thought I didn't think so.

But that's OK, no BFD, everything's cool as far as I'm concerned. :)

Obviously you don't belong to the group I was talking about. I really didn't even read your post. Got disgusted enough to post before making it to the bottom. No hard feelings.

The reason I don't believe soldiers are "fighting for our freedom" is because whenever someone ask "how" people say that they prevent people from invading.

This argument is stupid because if you look at countries that had zero freedom such as:

North Korea
Nazi Germany
The Soviet Union
Communist China
Japan in 1940

All of these countries did a fantastic job at "preventing people from invading"....but that in no way gives the citizens "freedom".

If you would've said soldiers are fight for our protection that would at least make some kind of sense, but saying they are fight for our "freedom" is just retarded!

The only people that have the power to give or takeaway freedom are people that are residing WITHIN the country such as politicians, CEOs, policemen etc.

Lets say you were living in America during slavery and you wanted to fight for black peoples freedom, would joining the military have any possible effect on their freedom?

Right now, the US military is defending\maintaining the US's sphere of influence. Why does the US still have bases in Japan and Korea?

The military serves to prop up our entire economic system by maintaining our influence around the world, enforcing membership in the petrodollar and various other more subtle actions.

I would argue that the vast majority of troops buy into the whole "fighting for freedom" line. However when you have circumstances like SFC Martland getting drummed out of the service for meting out justice to a violent child molester, the entire service starts to lose it's moral authority. Considering the fact that the US military is, and has been, the most trusted government institution for decades, that's relevant. If we're not doing what's right, it becomes increasingly difficult to distinguish us from mercenaries. And while I have no problem with mercenaries, if I'm expected to act like one I'd prefer to be paid like one.

If you own a lot of defense company stock, they are fighting for your freedom to retire early.
