How are Sharp AQUOS LCD HDTV's?

Looking at the LC-52D82U and read about some buzzing/banding issues as the major complaint.
But other than that, it's one of the best LCD displays, with the high point being that it produces the darkest blacks that rival plasmas.
Another great thing about it is that it comes with a QAM tuner and 3 HDMI inputs.

How does it compare to a Panasonic TH-50PX60U?

One big difference is that the Panasonic is only 720P and the Sharp is 1080P.
I can get it at about the same price range as the Panasonic.

Anyone with experience with either, or knowledge on plasma/LCD HDTV's?

Last Christmas I purchased one after many months of reading. Very very satisfied with the picture quality!

The only complaint I have is that it is a bit slow processing analog stations so it takes it a few seconds to display when you turn the station.

My father-in-law got one of Sharp's top of the line 32" LCDs last year. He absolutely loves it, it's a great looking display, and with actual HDTV content it puts out a superb picture.

Edit:

My bad, he got a 37" TV, not 32". Specifically, he got the LC-37D90U, which at the time was their best 1080p 37" LCD, I'm sure there's better now though.

I recently bought one after months of looking/comparing, etc. Great picture. I have no complaints at all.

I have seen no evidence of banding or any other picture quality issues.

The banding issues on anything over the 62U (82 and 92) seem to be minor and spotty at best. Personally, I think that it's mostly the very picky AV crowd being very...picky. I have seen them in the store and they look great, been considering getting a 92 series 52".

I have the LC32D41U, which is the 32" model (that and the D42U) that they actually made in house, unlike the D40U. Regardless, its an amazing set, and I have it professionally calibrated and the picture did indeed improve. Watching BD movies on it through the PS3 is an exciting experience. :)

The Sharps all look like ass in my store, but I'm assuming that's because they have out of the box settings, it's Best Buy, and they're next to the XBR2's. Either way, I do notice quite a bit of banding with them, and macroblocking shows up more often on them then any other set. Not bad for the price, but I'm personally not a fan.

:Q Wait, what?

Sharp AQUOS 52" 1080p Flat-Panel LCD HDTV: $4,274.99
Panasonic 50" Plasma HDTV (TH-50PX60U): $1799.99

Not that it compares in price to the 720p Panny but you can get the Sharp (92u) for about 1K less. Personally, if I had 4k to drop, I'd probably ket the 50" 1080p panasonic.

Employee discount of sorts.

Ah, I figured as much. I'd jump on the Sharp unless there are any other high-end models to which you can apply your "employee discount."

EDIT: On second thought there does seem to be a lot of talk of "banding issues" on AVS and in reviews... 720p vs. 1080p with possible banding (but huge discount), tough call. I will say that I love my 42" Panasonic Plasma :)

never seen the Sharp, but i would go for the panasonic plasma. plasma has better picture quality overall, and the panasonic is the best plasma for the money.

I have the LC-42D62U and I love it. There is no banding whatsoever on mine although the 46" and 52" are the ones known for banding. I personally prefer LCD over plasma which made my decision much easier. I'd go to a store and compare the two although keep in mind what you see in the store isn't necessarily what you'll see in your house.

I just very recently bought the 46", and its amazing! Thankfully, there is no banding so that was a big relief. Playing blurays on ps3 results in mindblowing picture quality, and I love pc-gaming at 1920x1080. Regular cable TV looks weak, but thats not what i'm using it for anyway (movies and gaming here). Very rich colours, no visible ghosting and very deep blacks/whites. I have no complaints.

half of the issue could be the signal incoming too, because I've never seen a Sharp that has a quality input show any signs of macroblocking.
Typically at Best Buy and Circuit City, the Sony's also tend to be hooked up to a separate input, or something alone those lines. I personally don't know why that would be the case. And Sharp's really benefit from calibration of some sort, be it pro or through a consumer video disc, because they seem to ship with horrible default settings. My color decoders weren't accurate, but they are almost perfectly accurate after calibration. Sadly those are things consumers cannot access unless they are willing to do some digging in the service menus and risk royally F'ing up the picture.

I know at our BB, we don't hook up the Sonys to any sort of special line. We've got an open box Sony that we put next to the Sharp just because we had some free space there, and the Sony blew it away. I can see what you're saying about the Sharps needing calibration though, because out of the box the blacks do NOT look black like reviews say. I'd honestly say that out of the box, the Sharps blacks look like a lower-end LCD's blacks.

The new Samsung LCD models are receiving high praise.
I'm looking at the LN-T5265F

Apocalypse,

How about red push? (your webshots are proxy blocked)

Is that just an in store issue, or was it red pushed out of the box? (check skin tones on caucasian actors)

I seriously considered one when I bought my 'shiba 1080p, but the price difference and that issue scared me away.

BTW - the new Samsungs are awesome. Basicly getting the Sony XBR for a lower price.

I have a 8800 GTS, I am linking the tv to the compter via a HDMI TO DVI cable and linking the PS3 via HDMI TO HDMI cables. The Aquos has 2 hdmi inputs.

I had to select 1080p from the video card control panel and select DOT by DOT on the tv to display the resolution properly. The picture quailty is amazing.

This set easily beats the competition since it has 4ms timing, a higher contrast ratio than most others and is 1080p (1920x1080). The blacks are very deep.

There is no red push, every setting can be optimized since the tv is very flexible. I like to play with maximum contrast since it gives very deep colors.

When looking at other screens, response time wise to use it as a computer monitor for gaming and movie watching, overall the Sharp wins for me since it has a very fast response time (4ms) and a higher contrast ratio 2000:1 as compared to the Samsung and Sony. Sony is overpriced considering the 46"xbr3 only has 1300:1 static contrast ratio
Panel Response Time: 8 ms (grey to grey) and Samsungs have only 8ms timing and a similar ratio to the sharp.

Sharp on the other hand has a 2000:1 native ratio and a 10000:1 dynamic ratio, and 4ms timing.
The numbers clearly state the Sharp as a winner, your only concern should be to get a set without banding.
