How are sateen sheets? And is there a big difference in thread count?

I was thinking of ordering some new sheets from overstock.com, and it looks like they stock a lot of sateen sheet sets. My gf tells me they are supposed to feel like satin, but she's never really been around any sateen sheets before. Also, they have many choices on thread count as well, which I know what it is, but I don't know the advantage of an 800 tc sheet set over a 400 tc set.

Question 1. Would you recommend sateen sheets for the cheapass buyer like me?
Question 2. Is there any comfort or durability advantage of a higher thread count?

They feel a whole lot better. I have a 500 myself and would never willingly buy another set under 350.

You are talking about the thread count, correct?

the high thread count sheets feel so thick though! why are they considered better?

i have sateen sheets myself and i like how smooth they feel.

i got 1000 count sateen from overstock.com

they are really thick, and i love them. i can't see a reason to get more than 1000 count tho
