How are pictures emailed?

Someone has asked me how can they email a pic. I have never done it and I don't have a scanner but I am of the opinion that a scanner is used to scan the pic to the HDD and then the sender can email the pic. Of course, if a pic is already on a HDD then just go through the correct steps and email the pic. Also, does the size of the pic have anything to do with the sender's ability to email the pic?
May I have your answer to this and then I can forward the answer to the friend.

My mail provider only allows up to a 1 mb file at a time, you can use a free program like irfanview to resize pictures already on your drive. If you need to put them on your drive, yes, you would have to scan them in and save them, unless you have a digital camera.

In outlook express you can add an attachment or insert pictures in the body of the email.
Hope this helps answer your ?

P.S. this probably should have been in the tech support forum.

Yes thank you, your answer is most helpful and I will pass along your info. I believe she now has IE6 and I think that means she is using MS hotmail, but not out of choice. Seems she had some trouble with her ME system and MS "talked" into whatever it is she now has. I think hotmail allows 2MB for send and receive. One can pay $20 per year for more storage and the 2MB is increased to ?

Lots (most??) scanner applications create TIF or BMP images by default but these are very size heavy formats, obviously when emailing a picture the file size of the picture matters hence you should convert them to JPG format (IrfanView can do this for you).
