I'm picking up a cheaper system for my dorm room and I'm thinking about getting a refurb system from Onkyo. Experiences? Good/bad?

From ShopOnkyo?

Some people have had a lot of luck with them while others have tried contacting them and gotten really poor customer support trying to deal with issues their products have had.

If you just need stereo not 5.1 then I have a nice 10 year old Kenwood you can pick up free in downtown Bellevue :)

My last Onkyo was a refurb. Ran it for four years without a problem then sold it on Craigslist.

I've had my Onkyo refurb for a year and a half or so and it's been great. My only complaint is an audible click when it switches in and out of Dolby (noticeable on HD stations with SD commercials) but it's a very minor issue and it seems to be a receiver flaw, not because it's a refurb.

Yeah, Shoponkyo's refurbs are generally in brand new condition. I've bought several items from them and never had a problem. But as yoyo said, getting ahold of them if something does go wrong can be a chore.

Ya, I have no idea why they do that, I mean I believe they just switch processors but it sounds like a freakin click of a surge suppressor switch.

They are just relays turning on and off, no big deal. I have a Onkyo 919THX that is 14 years old or so that still makes these clicks, it better to have a click then a thump when turning on and off the amps inside the receiver.
