How are negative ions related to ozone?

Does one create the other or are they by products of one another? Do all negative ion generators produce ozone also? Do ozone generators ever produce negative ions? I am quite confused on this matter and have failed at finding a clear solution to my question online or in the books.

Negative ions are negatively charged molecules. Ozone, O3 is one type of negative ion. You can read on the web, google search 'what is a negative ion' to see different means of production.

There are ozone generators?

Why in the name of fsck would you want to produce ozone, a poison? :Q

Waste water treatment.
Ok, I can understand an industrial application, but this guy is talking about devices for your home...

and other purposes as well. we used it in a bunch of synthesis rxns in orgo chem

If ozone is a type of negative ion then why are there ozone generators out there that do not produce any measureable negative ion production? Also, from the EPA (linkie here):

ozone does not remove particles (e.g., dust and pollen) from the air, including the particles that cause most allergies. However, some ozone generators are manufactured with an "ion generator" or "ionizer" in the same unit. An ionizer is a device that disperses negatively (and/or positively) charged ions into the air.

If indeed ozone is a type of negative ion, why would the EPA clearly differentiate between the 2.

Because of its inherent reactive nature, it has been said to not only treat water, but neutralize odor in air. However, from what I have read thus far, it would seem that its effectiveness is more specifically to neutralize odor of a bacterial nature rather than that with a chemical composition.

They use them in salt water aquariums, too.

I'm not sure about all products, but I haven't specifically seen any products which produce ozone as a primary and intended function.

I have seen products which produce ozone as a secondary consequence of the electrostatic mechanism used to positively charge particles and attract them to negatively charged electrostatic plates.

The manufacturer then 'spins' this incidental production of ozone as a benefit.

I can't think of any non-industrial reason to produce ozone as an intended 'feature'.

What oxone generators are those. If it produces Ozone it produces negative ions because rthat what an O3 molecule is. I saw nothing on that link to imply that ozone isn't a negative ion. It's wrong if it does. There's no getting around the fact that O3 is a negative ion, definitionally.

negative ion generators usually generate the ions using high voltage corona discharge and ozone is a usual byproduct associated withe lectrical discharges. i dunno the exact mechanism but i guess it has something to do with the ionization of oxygen molecules
