How are islands connected to the Internet?

Yeah, or I think they might use microwave satellites. I am not really sure, this is a good quesiton. I know there is a transatlantic fiber cable that provides some of the "World WIde" internet.

They load the internet on zip disks and ship it out to all the islands in the world.

They place disks in coconuts. Then you need an african swallow to grasp the husk and fly it back and forth.

thats only certain high tech islands...the old ones still have two cans connected to a really long string

Yes. It is faster than using Satellite connections as those have a lot of latency since they are so far away.

I guess they could use microwave but wouldn't that be expensive power-wise?

Depends on the island, I think. The important ones, like Japan and the UK, obviously get fibre backbone. The small ones have either satellite or packet radio, methinks.
