How Are Heat Pumps These Days?

BDawg

Anyone have a modern day heat pump? All of my experience is with older heat pumps.

We may have to replace our HVAC soon (Apollo Style). We like the heat of a gas based system. From my experience with older heat pumps, they never seem to blow out warm air; it always feels cool. How are the modern day ones? Do they actually blow warm air? Would you buy another one?

The place I just moved into has one, but I haven't had to use the heat. For that matter, I probably won't have to given the heat from my systems.

I had one in my house in Indiana. It was an energy star approved house, ~2300sq ft, all electric, ~10yrs old. My utilites ran ~$80 in the summer and $120 in the Winter. I'd give anything to have those bills here in Iowa.

Few things...
How old is your house?
How well is it sealed and insulated?
Where are you located?

Heat...pump? *googles the term* 😱 sounds like a magical device! Then again, I still burn coal...*runs from environmentalists*

How old is your house? 10 years
How well is it sealed and insulated? Seems pretty decent
Where are you located? Central NC

BDawg...sounds like you are a prime candidate for a heat pump. I think they still blow cool air, but are even more efficient than the units even 5 yrs ago. Plus you can get an add on to run assist your water heater in the summer (pumps heat from the air into your water)

One way to get alot of information is to read up on the subject a bit and then talk to an HVAC professional. Did that a while back

I'll tell you, here in Virginia, I'd never own a heat pump. However, NC is a bit warmer, so it could be do-able. However, I still think SC and below are prime candidates for heat pumps. I love gas heat.

I had two houses with a heat pump, but it was in FL, so it wasn't used very much. I do know that they don't work too well when it's below freezing, but that only happened less than five days a year where I lived so it wasn't a big deal.

BTW, this was about 10 years ago, so I'm sure they're better now.
