I had to talk to a young (under 25 years old) detective just a couple of nights ago. He was wearing baggy shorts with a long t-shirt and when he went to wipe the sweat off his forehead with that t-shirt I noticed his gun. He had it in his waist unfastened! Is this normal? I thought they had to have their weapons secured as a police officer?

The detectives I know wear business attire with holsters on their belt. None of that shoulder-harness Law and Order bull...they generally have their weapons and badge in plain sight, and they wear a sportcoat if they want to conceal it.

Well this guy was very very young and I got the impression that he was trying to show off.

That's not unusual. However, if he's wise he'll excercise a bit more discretion. I personally don't ever want ANYONE to know when I'm carrying. I mean, some freak may want to snatch it and use it on me or just snatch it and run. Those holsters are not as secure as the ones that deputies use while on uniformed duty.

I've seen them in socks, in leg holsters and just tucked into back pockets.

The best officers will never allow it to be shown.

There was a time when I was in an area being prepped for a presidential visit in '92 and the secret service was there doing some work. They weren't shy about displaying their firepower before he got there. All agents armed with 4 or 5 weapons and a small but powerful auto slung under one arm. When the pres arrived you saw nothing. Unless you count the 5 or 6 snipers on the buildings in the distance.

if he was in baggy cloths and a t-shirt, he was probably doing undercover stuff, which means he needs the gun to be easily removable and concelable.
