Compaq Evo N600c
1.06 ghz PIII
256 mb sdram
20gb hd

$510 shipped. Think this is a good deal?

I've heard some good things, what do you guys think about compaq? The battery life says like 4 hrs, but I don't think that long. I'm hopeing like 3-3.5hrs. How does the ATi Radeon Mobility perform (16mb)? Thanks for the help!

I've got 3 (Celeron 1.7GHz, P4 1.7GHz, P4 1.4GHz), and they're all sluggish as hell (more than you would expect). The only good thing about them thus far is that they've been solid in that no component has failed in over a year of running Seti.

The ones I've used have all been fairly solidly constructed. They're not exactly performance machines, though.

The only item I've ever had to replace on an Evo is the keyboard, which is more a testament to how much use I got out of them than to the quality of the keyboard.

I use that exact machine for my work laptop. I have 768Mb ram and a DVD/CDRW drive. It's a sold machine, not too big.. magnesium top. I also have one of the Compaq 802.11b modules that fits on the lid and it works great.

Battery isn't too bad, especially if you modify it's setting by dimming, turning down the harddrive etc... 4 hours is not really realistic.

I wouldn't mind picking up a couple more of those for work, where can you get it for that price?

Also the ATI is good, will do great DVD playback if you have a DVD drive. Won't knock your socks off 3D wise, but with only 16MB of ram and an older chipset what do you expect right?

Congrats on the purchase. Check the laptop out and give us your "mini review" of it telling us how it is. Someone at work has one and I was contemplating making an offer to him for it.
