How are canon printers these days (820)?

Looking at the ink jets. Looking for text and photo quality. I know epsons are pretty nice, but until they move the heads to the ink carts, or make it easier to clean, they aren't an option. And the separate ink tanks is a big plus. Looking at the 820.. mainly cause that's the cheapest borderless printing one (another need). coming from an HP, the text is just EXCELLENT. Last time i saw canon's.. even on high quality paper.. the text was pitiful.

I ask for my uncle who's looking into getting one (and myself.. if i find $300 lyin around ;)), and this would be easily answer if Best Buy and CompUSA had *working* demo's of the specific printer. So i'm just curious as to anyone who is out there that has one, and possibly coming from an HP to compare the text.

My cousin has the HP100 or something.. small 4x6 only.. it seemed nice, just didn't like the perferated edges.

I bought my GF the S800 for Xmas. I was totally blown away by the photo quality. I've used some other decent quality inkjets before but the S800 is in a different leauge. I'm pretty sure the S820 is the borderless version of the 800.

Only complaints are that you really need to use the Canon paper. Using the Kodak "premium" paper will yield poor results... it can't handle the quantity of ink or someting like that.

Anyway, with the S800 and a 2.2MP digital camera I can do 4x6's that 90% of the people can't distinguish from 35mm 4x6 1-hour prints. I still laugh every time we print something out, it's impressive.

Text is OK, I use a laser for text so it didn't matter much when I got the 800. I wish I had borderless though :(

Quality is excellent, and the printing cost is lowest thanks to the separate ink tanks, one for each of the
six colors used.

Besides, there's an 820D as well, equipped for printouts directly from digital camera storage media.

yeah, but the 820D just has extra features i don't need ;) The 750 is an even lower cost for me... but it's a standard 3 color one... oh well. My uncle will probably only print anything important text-wise from work anyway. Thx for the input (any more is also appriciated :)).

If the S750 is anything like my S630 -- and I suspect it is -- then it'll do very nicely for photo printing. You'd have to look very closely to be able to tell the difference between it and a real "photo" printer.

Well the 750 is just a faster version of the 500, which in turn has been replaced with the 520 that still is 4-color but can do the zero margin trick.

Photo printing on the six-color models is still better, but only noticeable (but then very obviously) if you compare printouts side by side. Thanks to the high physical resolution of 2400x1200, even the 4-color ones do a very good job in photo printing.

hrmm.. interesting. Maybe i can convince my parents to buy my current HP for my siblings.... hehe.

Why is it so hard to find sample print outs :( Best buy used to have a book of samples... but not anymore. Again, thanks for the input.

That's exactly what the S630 was -- a faster version of the S500. So apparently I was correct and the S750 must be the replacement for the S630.

I wish they'd come up with a more straightforward and less confusing model naming/numbering strategy...

the 520 is pretty fast... i finally found a store that had a working sample thing. I must say, the text quality has greatly improved from what i used to know of canon. Altho, i didn't realize the 4x6 were also perferated.... i saw the 785ex($200@compusa) and the sample 5x7's they had were nice... no perferations.
