How are BIOS updates done? Latest only or incrementally?

I would have just assumed that I use the latest BIOS from the ASUS site for this Z-87 Pro Edition V MoBo, but from some of the wordings on some of the updates it appears I need to incrementally build up from the original Bios and install each update so they can properly build on one another to create a latest version? That seems like a lot of work. Can that be right, or do I just flash to the latest and go?

Normally it's "latest only", but I have seen cases where manufacturers have said "apply update x first then y" or "apply this update twice".

Okay,

Here's another example under the "chipset" files for my MoBo:

The (lack of) a unified naming convention leads one to believe there are different items here to install...

There's a "Management Engine Interface","Chipset software installation utility" and a "chipset driver"...

Management Engine interface and software installation utility sound like they should go together but WHO KNOWS??? The lack of configuration management is disturbing...

IMEI and the chipset install utility are two different things and both are worth installing. If you don't install IMEI then you'll end up with an unknown device in device manager (which windows update might sort for you).

I don't see any note that implies incremental update one version before another, only that if you specifically intend to use 4th gen Core processor, you should first update to a BIOS that supports 4th gen processors using a particular flash utility prior to installing the new processor. The 'BIOS updater for 4th gen' utility probably is needed to properly update the embedded controller not just the main BIOS ROM.
