How accurate is The Epic of Gilgamesh's translation?

Reading it for the first time and it is pretty good little story. I know this is one of the oldest stories known to man, are there any more stories older than this one? Also... and the main point of the thread, how well was it translated or did the people that translated it have to "fill in" missing portions?

Well, there are many different translations of the story. From what I I remember, the original text is pretty much there. The "filling in" is pretty much guessing as to what specific (obscure) words mean -- not actually writing the story.

As far as textual evidence goes, I'm not sure that there are "stories" older than this -- but that brings up all sorts of issues as to what is a "story." You certainly have some recurring themes that come out of Gilgamesh and other works like it -- a worldwide, disasterous flood, for instance(e.g. Noah's flood). And, if these did come from a single historical event, certainly the information got passed on (as I recall you see this even in South American cultures, but don't quote me). But whether or not it got passed on in writing or not is an entirely different question.

And, as far as those who were wondering, no I don't have a good date for the suggested writing date of Genesis, and my reference stuff is all at work. If you're interested (and I imagine few are) you'll have to figure it out on your own.

Have fun with Enkido and Gilgamesh.

hmm interesting. wasn't a lot of the old testament like a derivation from the stories/folklore/etc of the epic of gilgamesh?

There are some people who think that, as far as I recall. It's been a long time since I took that class though. I'm not sure if that's because of the overlap of the flood story (and hence the idea that it must be a derivation because it's later), or because of more concrete evidence. If I see my religion-PhD. friend today, I'll ask her.

Oh, sorry, most of what we'd be referring to here is Genesis-only. (There's also, if I recall correctly, a tree of life in Gilgamesh -- or something similar.) I don't recall anything else in Gilgamesh that might be linked to anything past Genesis though.

The great flood and Cain vs Able were taken from there as well, were they not?
