How about Yakima, WA ??

Montano

Lifer
I decided not to move to Pasco, WA mostly because of a pay cut I'd have to take. It just so happened that the boss in Pasco gave my name to the boss in Yakima and he wants me to call him tomorrow.

I'm assuming the Yakima job will not involve a pay cut, as I'm sure this was mentioned as why I didn't go to Pasco. So I'd like to get some info on the city, weather, schools, etc...

From my brief Google search, it seems to snow from Nov through Jan. But it didn't really say how much snow........ It was mentioned that it's called the 'Palm Springs' of WA State.

Yakima is a good place to go wine tasting, I suppose (I prefer Chelan, myself). Are you a city person or a country person? If country, you'll like it. Yakima isn't a big city by any stretch of the imagination. If you're a city person who likes a night life, a singles scene, a lot of cultural resources, etc Yakima probably isn't for you.

Well, my personal feeling is that most everything east of the Cascades is ass. But I have very specific likes and dislikes, so I'm probably not the person to ask.

I'm from a big city, but I'm not a night life person. I want good schools for my kids, and something to do on weekends.

What do you mean by "something to do on weekends" precisely? There's not going to be a lot in Yakima to go and do - it's kind of a make your own entertainment type place.

Yakima is kind of a sh!thole...I went thru last summer after not being there in over 20 years, and I was surprised at how bad it had gotten...Speak spanish? You'd better if you move there...

My kids are into sports, so that consumes my weekends now. Just some decent shopping and good places to have dinner. And yes, I am fluent in Spanish.

I also noticed that a majority of the homes for sale were built in the 50's and 60's...... no new developments in Yakima ??

Over the years, my dad has had some great job offers from Yakima, but he's turned them down because he simply did not want to raise his family there. I live in Wenatchee, which is great, but I've heard some bad things about Yakima. Of course, you can hear bad things about any city.

I'd live in Ellensburg and commute.

We call Yakima the 'armpit of north central washington'

I recall hearing that a lot as well. Bunch of drunk Indians is anotehr term I've heard to describe the populace too.

Yup.

Not a good sign, dude. Considering the 90's housing boom, if there aren't a bunch of houses built in the 90's in the area, the place probably has some major problems.

Grew up there man. All my family is there, ask away. 🙂

Economically, Yakima is a fairly static situation. Not a great deal of new industry or anything. If you have a niche job there with good security, it is a good place to raise your kids. I grew up in Selah, a bedroom community just north of town. I'd recommend that or the west side of town itself.

it is more or less the same, it is only 60 miles NW of the tri-cities area
cost of living is going to be about the same

I was in Yakima last week for work...its the RV belt to La Grande OR..employs alot of people. It was snowing pretty good when I past through. Summer is nice in that area to.
