Why? S939 is getting phased out for M1/M2 next year; so lets kick it with a soon to be 4 generations old socket? Guess if you really like your CPU, this is a way to go.

On 754? Kind of pointless. Your processor and ram would be a huge bottleneck depending on your video card.

By the way, I haven't been keeping up on new technologies, what's the M1/M2?

AMD's upcoming sockets for new A64 and Opteron chips due next year.

How so? If you have a 3400+ or 3700+ you're just as CPU limited as most folks running S939 setups and you can still run 1GB+ of RAM.

Agreed. A 3700+ clawhammer was a spendy little chip and most aren't crazy about giving it up yet. My s754 3200+ did 2.75GHz, pretty nice and that old setup was actually a bit faster in 3D than my current rig. (though at the time I had an X800 Pro unlocked to XT).
Some may want to jump into the SLI ring without going broke. One of those boards and a couple of 6600GTs would be a nice boost for someone without spending a fortune.

Exactly...people always seem to bash socket 754, but the Newcastle 3400's and the 3700's were and still are great chips. I've seen the 3400 NC (2.4 ghz) for around $160-170.

A64 3400+ - $160
(2)6600GT's ~ $100-150

Sounds pretty good to me.

Socket939 is simply dual channel memory for a processor that does not need it.

At best, there's a 5% performance difference between plataforms, so beleive me... you would not miss the bandwith that much at all.

The only reason to go 939 is for dual cores, then it CAN use the dual channel memory.
