How about a .mobi site?

I wouldn't mind a mobile version of the AT forums. Being able to just read and access them from my cell phone and not my smartphone would be nice. Fatwallet has a really great setup and would be great to have the same here. Are there any plans for such a site?

from past experiences of how fast and how far anandtech is moving at this point in time, I'd say five to ten years from now that you "might" see the kind of thing you're talking about.

they'll have to find way to advertise over your cellphone, PDA, mobile device, etc. just to keep the money flowin'

If I wrote a wrapper around the website (a screen scraper if you will) that allowed users to view threads from their phone but not post... would people use it? Mods would I get yelled at for this? You wouldn't "login" so it would simply show the posts and the replies.

I have sent a mail to Anand, and posted a message in the forums, but i doesnt look that someone is going to fix it soon.

I actually think that a full-scale implementation wouldn't be especially necessary. Someone could just write a script that lists the threads in the various areas as per normal, but links to the printable version of threads instead of the normal view.

Depending on how quickly I finish up some stuff tomorrow, I may give this a shot myself.

I've finished my initial script for the mobile site. To cut to the chase, here's the URL:

How It Works

The first page is a straight rip of the sidebar text from when you're logged in. The links have been changed to point to a local page, though.

When you click on a forum category, the script grabs the 20 topics listed on the page and displays their titles to you. The link is to the "Printable View" of the thread in FuseTalk, which should be pretty mobile-device friendly. I'm not willing at this point in time take the bandwidth hit to re-translate thread pages.


What I'd Like Feedback On

1. Does it work for you? (If it didn't, what kind of bug appeared?)
2. What device(s) did you test it upon?
3. What do you think of the font size? Bigger, smaller, just right?
4. Would you change anything?
5. Would someone like to host the script for me? Preferably somewhere with a nice AnandTech-related URL. I know some of you guys have that. The script uses PHP.

- Add "Topic Summary" line.
- Add "Originator" name.
- 'Fix' the Printable View. (Why the hell is the background colour for it gray?)

3. What do you think of the font size? Bigger, smaller, just right? Font needs to be smaller fr replys and posting details (by user, time, date) need to be smaller and a different color when posting details (by user, time, date)

This site actually worked quite well for me on my Palm Centro. Fonts look good and easy to read. Print option didn't work for me but sine I'm ona cell phone I don't see where that even comes into play. Long drawn out links tend to make the entire thread wide so there is some scrolling involved. But if there are no long links the pages display great.

anandtech.mobi, we could ask for a permission to use 'anandtech' in the domain name since it is not affiliated or anything. other than that, at-goes.mobi. 😀

Well, the stated goal of the administrators of this site is to move away from FuseTalk, so it doesn't make much sense for them to put together an official site now. They'd just be abandoning it shortly thereafter.

vBulletin doesn't have a mobile plugin that I know of. For that reason I've developed code to be used with any modern vBulletin site out there (though replies are not yet enabled), geared towards use on the iPhone/Android platform. Example: http://yllus.com/rfd/
