It seems like there is a small but steady stream of home repair/remodel questions in ot, and some of the advice I've seen given is not only wrong but flat out dangerous. Seems like a good idea to put them all in one place, that way the people here that are in the trades can find them and offer advice.
I know there is at least one other contractor here besides myself, and a couple plumbers and electricians.

Not a bad suggestion; I like it. I'm going to move this thread into the forum issues - suggestions forum.

I didn't put this in the suggestion box because it appears I had it hidden in my profile, and also forgot there even was one. I hope they have a fast connection at the old folks home...

I'm all for it too. I'm a first time homeowner and I have all sorts of projects going on right now. Last night I started tiling the bathroom. So far it's going pretty good considering that I've never done tiling before.

I'd certinaly be willing to post answers that were a bit more in depth if they weren't going to buried in a few hours. It's the one place were a slower pace might be of value.
It would also be helpful to outline a format for questions, info such as where the property is located and construction type will often impact what the right answer is. As an example, in CA everything we build is all about surviving an earthquake, in Detroit earthquakes aren't even considered and snow loads are what they worry about, in Florida it's wind. While the construction technique's for all three are very similar, the connection details very a great deal.

I would certainly like this. I don't think it would interfere significantly with any other forum, unlike the Garage et al.

Well there we go, five yes votes (six if you count Boats double thumbs up twice) out of a couple hundred thousand members, looks like a landslide to me.
So whats the holdup?

This is a really crappy idea.

Mainly because you said I should post here saying it was good.

Honestly I think this place has enough forums as it is.

HI/DIY is nice and all, and I enjoy DIY stuff but I just don't see that much of it on here.

I officially retract my home improvement forum request. It won't work here, it will be dangerous, and Anandtech will end up getting sued over the multiple deaths caused by the advice given.

I think a home improvement forum would be really nice. It would give people more of a reason to stay here instead of going to other forums/sites.
