Close, but oh-so-wrong. The auto companies' research suggests that persons who care little about others tend to buy SUV's, NOT that people who buy SUV's care little about others.
Most people who care little about others buy SUV's, but most SUV buyers do care about others a lot.
Your logic: People who don't care about others buy SUV's. This person owns an SUV. Ergo this person cares little about others.
Perfectly analogous logic: All chickens have feathers. This thing has feathers. Ergo it is a chicken.
Both use the same logical formulation. The second, however, clearly illustrates how the formulation is flawed.
