Someone asked me to DIY a Athlon PC for her, I am glad to do this. (DIYER)
I am confusing several AMD ChipSet: KT266A, AMD761, KM266, SIS 745. Can someone tell me which one is better performance or Cheap?
I would like to choose KM266, but I heard it's not stable as KT266A. PS, she use the computer just for DVD, article......
Thanks

KM266 is the KT266A with onboard video added. Of the chipsets you name, the AMD761 is the oldest and slowest, and KT266A would be the fastest in most situations.

If you like the onboard video for her light useage pattern, you should also look at the Asus A7N266-VM, which uses the nVidia nForce 220D chipset. nForce 220D has excellent Dolby-certified onboard audio, good onboard 3D video, and onboard 10/100 network. It performs fine and it's stable (I now have 19 of them where I work :D). It will work with any Duron, Athlon, AthlonXP or AthlonMP up to a 2400+, using the latest BIOS. If the computer will be using WindowsXP, then you don't even need to install drivers when building the computer (or so I hear from other people).

For motherboards, what mechBgon said! Get it at newegg for $68 shipped!

And how about cases, what case are you going to use? I think the best part of DIY is choosing the case!:)

The radical approach to "Cheap" would be this:

http://www.pcchips.com.tw/M810Lv71c.html

Onboard everything, including a non-upgradable Duron CPU. SiS 730S chipset. Modem card included, put a stick of PC133 SDRAM in, add drives and case, and you're set. This is well fast enough for any normal computing task.

Also available as ECS K7SEM v3.0C. Same thing, different sticker.
