i bought the $77 radeon video card and a blue orb, ive been tugging on the heatsink but it seems secure like a rock. I dont want to damage the chip. Any suggestions on how to get the heatsink off so i can use my orb? Thanks1

Put it in an anti-static bag, throw it in your freezer for 30 minutes, & then pop the HS off with a table knife.

Nothin' to it.

Or you could play 3D games for hours to heat it up then carefully pry it off.

hmm, ill try the 2nd method, i hope thats easier, i would assume that if i put it in the freezer it will get moist.

Glues that are used to hold HS's on are stronger at higher temperatures than at lower temperatures. Freezing them makes the glue brittle, & easy to break.

As for getting the card moist, it's possible it will develop a slight layer of condensation if you pull it out in a humid environment. My GF2 GTS had no problems whatsoever with the process, though.

Up to you, but I'd use the freezer.

actually when in the antistatic bag, it won't become moist. you will get some condensation after you remomove it from the freezer but nothing to be too worried about as it will quickly dry out. the freezing temperature causes the glue to become brittle & hence easily cracked & seperated!

Man, anything over 2 minutes in the freezer is overkill. I've removed several vid card HSF via the freezer trick and most I've left in the freezer for only about 40 seconds and they popped off fine. :)

PliotronX...

Then you might as well have not even put it in the freezer. That's not long enough to make a difference.
